Cardinals get split in opening games with Zillah, Connell

Paulson strikes out 12, Kelly cracks key homer in Zillah win

Senior Adam Paulson threw a 12-strikeout complete game victory as Medical Lake scored a 5-0 non-league baseball victory last Saturday over Zillah at Connell, Wash.

Paulson had command on the mound, scattering just four hits and was ahead in the count on 22 of 26 batters he faced. The Cardinals got all the offense they needed when Kasey Kelly hit a third inning homerun, one of just four hits on the ML side. Cory Wagner, Roman Kissack and Dylan Rusfeldt all had singles for the Cardinals.

“Adam was lights out on the mound for us,” Cardinals’ coach Kerry Kelly said.

Things were not as pretty in the second game against hometown Connell, which limited Medical Lake to just a single hit by Paulson. The Eagles scored three runs in the first inning but did not put the game away until the bottom of the fifth inning where they scored six runs.

The Cardinals are on the road at Newport Saturday at noon and 2 p.m. for a doubleheader that begins Northeast A League play. Medical Lake hosts Freeman next Tuesday for a single game and then Kettle Falls Wednesday, both starting at 4 p.m. Those are the finals games prior to spring break.

A preview of Medical Lake baseball will appear next week.
