Kydd resigns as Eastern Washington volleyball head coach

Associate head coach Lisa Westlake will serve as interim coach for rest of 2012 season

FROM NEWS SERVICE REPORTS

Eastern Washington University has announced the resignation of head volleyball coach Miles Kydd, effective Tuesday, Aug. 28. Kydd tendered his resignation for personal reasons according to an EWU athletics department news release.

Currently the associate head coach for EWU volleyball, Lisa Westlake will serve as interim head coach for the duration of the 2012 season.

“I accepted Coach Kydd's resignation today,” EWU athletics director Bill Chaves said. “We are fortunate to have someone of Coach Westlake's caliber step in as interim head coach and look forward to her leading the program for the remainder of the season.”

An official search for Eastern's next head volleyball coach will commence once the 2012 season is complete.

Kydd will be leaving the program after nine years as a member of the Eagle volleyball coaching staff. He was named head coach in January 2008, after four years as an assistant under former EWU head coach Wade Benson.

In his four years at the helm, Kydd compiled a 57-60 (.487) overall record and 40-25 (.615) mark in the Big Sky Conference. In 2008, his inaugural year as head coach, Kydd was selected as the Big Sky Conference Coach of the Year after leading the Eagles to a BSC regular-season title.

Eastern advanced to the postseason in three of his four years, and had nine different players named to one or more All-Big Sky Conference teams, including 2008 MVP Hayley Hills.

Westlake is in her fifth season with the Eagles, as she signed on with Kydd in 2008. Westlake was promoted to associate head coach in 2012.

Prior to arriving at Eastern, she served as director of operations at Gonzaga University for the 2007 season and was a volunteer assistant coach with the Bulldogs in 2006. Since moving to Spokane, Westlake has coached some of the best volleyball players in the area as the U-18 national head coach with the Spokane Splash volleyball club.

She played volleyball at the University of Oregon from 1983-84, and helped lead her team to the NCAA Sweet 16 in 1984. As a setter, Westlake was an All-NorPac First-Team selection in 1984 and second-team honoree in 1983. She holds the Oregon all-time career record for assists per set (10.95) and service aces per set (0.71), and still ranks among the top ten in school history for career assists (1,401).
