After a thorough investigation, the Spokane Regional Health District had determined a recent e. coli outbreak at Eastern Washington University was traced back to romaine lettuce served at a dance camp.

Medical Lake police were still investigating the July 11 drowning of 21-year-old Christopher Barton who died while swimming near cliffs on the east side of Medical Lake.

In a special meeting, the Cheney School Board voted to release current superintendent of schools, Dr. William Riggs, from his three-year contract in order for him to accept a position in Spokane School District 81. Riggs, who had two years remaining of his contract, was offered the position of deputy superintendent in District 81. Riggs, who made slightly over $24,000 in Cheney would earn slightly more money in Spokane with a salary of $27,000.

In other Cheney school board news, members also voted to make class size 24.8 students per teacher.

A traffic accident on Interstate 90 near Tyler claimed the life of Medical Lake resident Ann Haugen and hospitalized four of her family members. The car, a 1967 Datsun, driven by Haugen's husband, Robert, struck the median, rolled and ejected all five occupants, including a six-month old baby and two children.
