Efforts to move the second stage of the SR-904 corridor ahead have hit a roadblock as bids on the project came in $80,000 over engineer's estimates this year and $160,000 over what was projected in 2000. “If we expected anything to go smooth on this project we were wrong,” Cheney's public works director, Don MacDonald, said.

Medical Lake's Parks and Recreation department is receiving a $30,000 grant from Spokane County but they are not sure they want to keep it. The funds are designed for capital projects such as ball fields but the city is unsure they want the maintenance chores that go with it.

With no grant money available, the city of Airway Heights has entered into an agreement with the state to obtain a $2.9 million loan to construct a new well.

Cheney's Julie Marsh was named to the Border League's first all star team while Ali Camp was named as the best newcomer in recently announced basketball awards.

Medical Lake's softball team returns four All-Great Northern League players – Hannah McConnell, Becky Hammel, Amanda Daily and Nicole Jones – from their 2000 state playoff team and hope to repeat their success.

Eastern Washington fell 73-58 to Cal State Northridge in the championship game of the Big Sky Conference basketball tournament played in Northridge. The Eagles finished the season 17-11 under first-year coach Ray Giacoletti. Jamal Jones and freshman Alvin Snow led the Eagles with 12 points apiece.

A $15.3 million school bond issue met with defeat again as Cheney voters turned down the measure when just over 46 percent cast yes ballots. The issue, which also lost in November, garnered 959 yes votes and 1,114 no, and would have funded additions and renovations to district schools. Cheney School Board members planned a meeting to see where they go next.

After an absence of three years, the Spokane County Health District is returning to Cheney with its immunization and well child clinics.

Cheney Outreach is getting set to celebrate its first year in operation by hosting a potluck for volunteers. The center organizes volunteer chore service for the elderly and physically challenged as well as energy assistance.

A near capacity crowd turned out at the EWU Pavilion for a concert with Bad Company and Damn Yankees, featuring a notable performance from “Terrible Ted” Nugent. Bad Company entertained with one of their signature songs, “Shooting Star.”

The Cheney boys' basketball team returned from Tacoma with a sixth-place trophy in the state AA tournament, winning their first two games 61-43 over Lindberg and 63-53 over Enumclaw, but dropping contests to Mt. Vernon 100-64 and 68-51 versus Sehome. Darby McKee's 16 points paced the Blackhawks' first win and added 19 against Lindberg.

March 12, 1981

The effort is being made to unite both businesses and citizens to fight plans by the city of Spokane to fight their proposed annexation of the Four Lakes area. “I'm concerned that Spokane's grandiose plans in the West Plains are not economically feasible,” Cheney Mayor Tom Trulove said.

A disagreement between the cities of Cheney and Medical Lake has caused another two-week delay in the awarding of a joint garbage contract between the two cities. There were concerns voiced over possible rate increases over the term of the five-year term of the deal.

Cheney Planners voiced their approval of the Downtown Redevelopment Study Strategy which will attempt to help the downtown area improve its appearance. The first step is the construction of a new canopy on both sides of First Street as well as the placement of new signage.

Two 10-speed bicycles have been added to the fleet of vehicles for the Medical Lake Police Department and will provide officers the ability of conducting silent patrols and saving gas.

The Medical Lake City Council approved the banning of motorized boats on Medical Lake.

Despite losing their final five games, the Eastern Washington University women's basketball team will compete at the Northwest Collegiate Women's Sports Association tournament when they meet the University of Washington in a game played at Seattle.
