October 21, 1999

The Medical Lake City Council was accused of ramming through a property tax increase in advance of an upcoming general election where the state will vote on Initiative 695 that will slash motor vehicle license fees.

The Eastern Washington University urban planning and marketing department are stepping wholeheartedly into Cheney's efforts to revitalize the city's downtown. The plan calls for establishing a central downtown location that would support efforts to boost promotion of the downtown. The program would require funding of $20,000.

Sophomore Peter Gresham kicked a 24-yard field goal with 48 seconds to play to give Cheney a 3-0 Border League football win over Coeur d'Alene. Meanwhile, Medical Lake rolled to a 42-8 win over Chewelah.

October 26, 1989

The Cheney City Council will consider some major future projects that include a new wastewater treatment plant, community golf course, a recreation center and city hall that will cost an estimated $13.3 million. The proposed projects would be under consideration for completion sometime between 1990-1995.

Eastern Washington University football could return to Cheney after a six-year absence, the prospect “will require a serious financial commitment,” athletics director Ron Raver said. A crowd of 5,099 attended the Homecoming game against Idaho State. Raver indicated that the seating capacity of Woodward Field would have to be increased from the present 5,000 to 12,000 to 15,000 – and even possibly enclosed with a dome.

Incumbent Dick Russell will be challenged by Joe Martella in the race for mayor in Airway Heights in the Nov. 7 election.

Even after the two Frontier League football leaders met head-to-head, they both remain undefeated at 2-0-1 following Cheney's 20-20 tie with Pullman. Coach Tom Oswald was a bit disappointed that his Blackawks once held a 20-0 lead in the game. “When you're up 20-0 you should put them away,” he said.

Medical Lake fell to 0-4 in the Northeast A League following a 38-21 loss to Newport.

October 25, 1979

Bio-Tronics, a Spokane-based medical products manufacturer, will break ground on construction of a new 30,000 square foot plant. The facility, which will be producing a new device to help treat hemorrhoids, will be located on 14 acres of land in the new 56-acres Cheney Industrial Park west of town on SR-904.

Because of a surplus of funds, Cheney residents will not be paying as much of an increase on their electrical bills as earlier thought. A study originally indicated that residents would face an increase of 42 percent, but now that number has been reduced to 33 percent.

Retired police chief Ray Balance will face incumbent Wayne Olsen for a seat on the Medical Lake City Council.

Eastern Washington University reported that enrollment reached an all-time high with 7,724 students enrolled.

The Cheney Blackhawks won their fourth game of the season and third in Frontier League play with a 24-9 win over Deer Park. Medical Lake fell to Colville 14-9 in Northeast A League play.

Eastern Washington University scored a 28-16 upset win over the University of Puget Sound in the school's Homecoming game played at Woodward Field.

40 Years Ago

October 23, 1969

A Spokane Air National Guard pilot, Capt. Larry T. Tripp, safely parachuted to the ground when his plane crashed and burned halfway between Cheney and Four Lakes. Tripp radioed he was having mechanical trouble, then took the plane to a higher altitude before bailing out. The unidentified aircraft circled back to earth, crashed and exploded in a field owned by Mrs. C.E. Stewart.

Ten candidates for city government and three for school board posts will be on the Nov. 4 general election ballot. Incumbents include Cheney Mayor George Fisher and Councilmen Norm Hove, Pete Hagelin and Jim Johnson. Kent Sooy, Lloyd Martin and Scott Lindsay are the incumbents looking to hold onto school board seats.

Coach Jim Hatch found some positives out of Cheney's 30-0 loss to Central Valley during the annual Homecoming game. Hatch pointed out that the defense “played their best this season.”

Eastern Washington State College will try to rebound from a 45-7 pasting at the hands of Boise State when they face Central Washington in an Evergreen Conference game in Ellensburg.
