  • West Plains Recruit Structural Academy 2016-2 Grad ceremony

    The West Plains Recruit Structural Academy graduated 19 recruits from its recent class, along with six crew leaders, during a Dec. 22 ceremony at Medical Lake High School's auditorium. The academy consists of firefighter recruits from Airway Heights and Medical Lake fire departments and Spokane County Fire District 10. It requires a large time commitment by the new recruits as they spend about four and a half months and over 200 hours of hands-on training.... Full story

  • WA Veterans Cemetery Wreaths Across America

    The Washington State Veterans Cemetery in Medical Lake held its Wreaths Across America ceremony, Dec. 19 - rescheduled from Dec. 17 because of weather conditions.     As Eastern built its lead through the first three quarters of last Saturday's playoff game with Youngstown State there were plenty of emotions seen during one of the coldest games ever player in Cheney. Players and fans celebrated and there was plenty of flag waving by the EWU cheer squad. In the end the Penguins prevailed 40-38 with a touchdown in the final second. Read the full story here.     This 3rd quarter sequence shows a play that may have changed the outcome of Saturday's semifinal round game won by Youngstown State on the game's final play. With Eastern leading 31-20 and driving for a possible deciding score, YSU's Billy Hurst took advantage of tipped ball that bounced high and was ultimately intercepted.     After stifling their first two opponents in the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs, the Eastern Washington defense had a more earthly performance in their 40-38 loss to Youngstown State.     Gubrud, Kupp receive 2016 TDC honors From a walk-on who thought he had the talent, to a national award-winning and record-setting quarterback. That’s the unlikely journey Eastern Washington sophomore quarterback Gage Gubrud took in 2016 as he led the Eagles to a 12-2 record and the Football Championship Subdivision’s semifinal playoff round.     The Northeast A League wrestling match scheduled for Dec. 15 between Medical Lake and visiting Chewelah was postponed when a bomb threat closed Jenkins Junior/Senior High School in Chewelah.     The Cheney High wrestling team brought home medals from the Dec. 17 Cadet Classic in Yakima. Boedy Taylor took second in the 182-pound bracket after he lost to Eisenhower’s Raul Jimenez, 7-1, in the championship round.     The Cheney High gymnastics team wrapped up the 2016 portion of their schedule with a third-place finish (134.295 points) at a Greater Spokane League meet held at Ferris High School, Dec. 14. Central Valley won the event with 153.075 points. Junior Alexis Miller took third in all-around competition with 32.9 points, finishing behind Ferris’ Jessica Harpel (35.675) and Shadle Park’s Brooklynn Tarr (35.275).     The Cheney High School girls basketball team's fortunes changed a bit with a pair of losses last week, ending their season-opening four-game winning streak. The Lady Blackhawks fell 54-30 to Idaho 5A classification Lake City at home last Tuesday.     This last weekend, mixed martial arts fans watched one of the sports great fighters compete in his last bout and ride off into the sunset. At the Dec. 17 UFC event in Sacramento, Calif., “The California Kid” Urijah Faber, 37, defeated English competitor Brad Pickett via decision in his last official fight.
