  • Cardinal girls' slow starts, finishes lead to pair of losses

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Dec 17, 2015

Slow starts and finishes did in the Medical Lake girl's basketball team in a pair of games last week. The Cardinals dropped a nonleague contest 48-27 to Lind-Ritzville-Sprague Dec. 8 and then lost their Northeast A League opener to Freeman, 46-30, Friday, Dec. 11. In both games offense was slim in the first and fourth quarters, which decided each outing. The Cardinals (0-1 NEA, 1-2 overall) were outscored 11-5 in the first and 15-4 in the fourth versus LRS. Likewise, Freeman...

  • Medical Lake wrestlers impress new coach in opener

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Dec 17, 2015

Considering Medical Lake’s first dual wrestling match of the 2015-16 season was against defending State 1A champion Freeman, and the Cardinals are young, relatively inexperienced and debuting a rookie head coach, there were a lot of things that could go really wrong. Instead, the Cardinals 45-21 loss to the Scotties was a successful display of where Medical Lake is headed in the sport, head coach Josh Edmondson said. “It would’ve been easy for my boys to look at their first...

  • Lady Blackhawks beat Deer Park for season's first win

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Dec 17, 2015

When asked, new Cheney High School girls' basketball head coach JT Johnson will tick off a laundry list of areas where the young Lady Blackhawks need to improve if they are to enjoy some success on the hardwoods this season. Better execution, cut back on turnovers, improve rebounding, they're all up there, but none higher than the one area of basketball just about every coach agrees they would like to see their team excel. "The biggest thing I've got to do is get the girls to...

  • Nadeau makes two state cuts at Selah meet

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated Dec 17, 2015

The Cheney High boys swim team started the season with a loss to Selah, 108-61, Dec. 10. • Reclassification time has schools, leagues on edge once again

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Dec 17, 2015

For a change when the every two year process of reclassification of the state’s high schools circles back into view, Medical Lake athletics director Chris Spring is breathing pretty easy. The same might not be said for the Northeast A League where the Cardinals now play and have done so since 2012. For the next month both Spring and NEA secretary Art Bickler will be monitoring things over at the Washington Interscholastic Athletic Association until Jan. 13, 2016 the last day f...

  • Medical Lake boys hold off Freeman in NEA opener

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Dec 17, 2015

The idea behind scheduling preseason games in any sport is to help improve skills when the games really count. That strategy paid big dividends for Medical Lake last Friday night, Dec. 11 in their Northeast A League boy's basketball season opener. The Cardinals won twice at home, Dec. 8 in nonleague play versus Lind-Ritzville-Sprague 63-49, but more importantly, 46-41 against Freeman. "What helped us the most was they had shooters, too," Medical Lake head coach Arnold Brown...

  • Blackhawks just miss three-game home sweep

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Dec 17, 2015

Whether or not the Cheney High School boys' basketball team enjoys success on the court this season will depend on a lot of factors, some outside of the Blackhawks control. But one thing might have been evident to fans attending last week's three-game home stand - and that is new head coach Gregg Smith's squad should be exciting to watch. The Blackhawks flew to a two-game winning streak, routing Deer Park 69-42, Dec. 8, and Idaho's Timberlake 55-39, Dec. 11 before being...
