  • Eagles fall to buzzer-beating Bulldogs, 61-60

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Dec 11, 2014

It was replays 2, Eastern Washington 0 last Wednesday night at Reese Court. One of the consultations of video was simply to affirm an out of bounds play, but the last of those officials' reviews was a crusher. It confirmed Ellie Tinkle's no-look, heavily contested, desperation shot from the baseline did indeed leave her hand just before time expired, giving Gonzaga University a 61-60 nonconference women's basketball victory over Eastern Washington. That sent one of the loudest...

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Dec 11, 2014

Defense was disappointing and turnovers a turning point. That was the short version of Medical Lake’s season-opening boys’ non-league 68-55 basketball loss last Saturday, Dec. 6 at home to 2B North member Northwest Christian. “D isn’t there right now,” Cardinals’ head coach Arnold Brown said. “We’ve got some more leaks to fix I guess.” Trailing 30-24 at the half, the Cardinals (0-1) had closed to within three points near the end of the third quarter. • Dealing with December's distractions

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Dec 11, 2014

NASCAR calls it their “silly season.” That’s a time when drivers are jumping from race team to race team in advance of the new season. It’s a time when stock car fans speculate who will end up where. College football doesn’t seem to have an official name for the time of the season when coaches come and go. For lack of something official, call it the “coaching carrousel.” It generally starts spinning each November and rewards new hires with multi-million dollar contracts — o...

  • Defense carries the day for Eagles

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Dec 11, 2014

Defense set the tone early in last Saturday's Football Championship Subdivision Playoff game between No. 5-ranked Eastern Washington and No. 12 University of Montana. And in the end it was defense that fully sealed the Eagles' 37-20 win over the Grizzlies at chilly, and sometimes rainy, Roos Field before a crowd of 7,919. Eastern, 11-2, moves on to the FCS quarterfinals versus Illinois State (11-1) this Saturday at 1 p.m. at Roos. The Eagles defeated the Redbirds 51-35 in...
