  • Letters to the editor

CHS will be represented well at LifeSmarts competition Greetings from Rhode Island. I was just notified that Washington state (Cheney High School) and Rhode Island (Barrington High School) will be sister-schools at the upcoming national LifeSmarts competition in Miami Beach on April 24-27, 2010. I could not be more pleased since I grew up in Spokane and call the Fairways Golf Course “home” when I visit my parents. For further context, I should also mention that I am the state coordinator for LifeSmarts in Rhode Island. Alt...

By LORI RUFF West Plains Relay for Life Development Chair I would like to see a world with more birthdays celebrated every year. My name is Lori Ruff and I am the team development chair for the West Plains Relay for Life. I am also a member of the “Nite Owl” team hoping to raise funds for the American Cancer Society. I participate in the Relay to honor family members and friends who have cancer. My dad was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2008. He is now cancer-free and participated last year in the Relay's “Survivor Lap....

  • New fines won't remedy connection addiction

By RYAN LANCASTER Staff Reporter I would venture to guess I'm not in the minority when admitting a terrible fact: I have in the past used my cell phone in a hands-on fashion while driving. Yes, it's true, but for the record these were infrequent incidents, most of which happened in the dawn of my cellular youth. Fortunately I didn't cause any accidents and I didn't get caught before wizening up into the much better person I am today. Nowadays cell phones, once thought to be so novel, are ubiquitous. Drivers (and walkers, and... Full story

  • In Our Opinion: Race to the top not perfect, but it's a start

Some call it an opportunity to foster real, practical reform in our public schools. Others say it's more federal meddling that will lead to problems down the road. Whichever side you fall on, it's a lot of money; $3.4 billion now that the Phase 1 winners—Delaware and Tennessee—have been awarded their big checks. Race to the Top is the federal government's newest initiative to improve our nation's schools, focusing on four main components: adopting assessments that prepare students for life after high school, building dat... Full story

Funding and labor setbacks delay planned installation of lighting for nightime league baseball in ML By RYAN LANCASTER Staff Reporter Plans to install lighting around the Medical Lake High School baseball diamond for night play are stalled because of construction and funding issues that threaten to derail the project altogether. Alexis Alexander, a 2001 MLHS graduate, has for several months been trying to get the project off the ground with the assistance of Medical Lake School District athletics director Chris Spring and...

  • Medical Lake girls' golf team looks to build on last season's successes

By PAUL DELANEY Staff Reporter Medical Lake's girls' golf team will rely on one state qualifier, a pair that made it to district play, plus their senior captain and four-year letter winner as they compete in Great Northern League play, and strive for more post-season exposure. Ten players, one senior, four juniors, three sophomores and a pair of freshmen make up the team that coach Ivan Gustafson will work with this spring. Junior Lindsey Campbell was the only member of the team to make the trip to state last year. An...

  • Parts are still coming together for Medical Lake girls' tennis team

By PAUL DELANEY Staff Reporter Even as the season moves into official Great Northern League competition, there is still a lot up in the air for the look of the Medical Lake girls' tennis team. Of course, it hasn't helped that mild spring weather that had worked in their favor has turned a bit nasty and has kept coach Dawn Eliassen's team off the court, thus preventing her from finalizing positions. So the Cardinals will go with a line-up where the singles are set – for now – and continue to tinker with some fine tuning. Eli...

  • Crunch Time for April 8, 2010

March Madness finale makes Monday's television viewing far from mundane By PAUL DELANEY Staff Reporter For a change, television on Monday night was far from mundane. That's due of course to Duke's riveting 61-59 win over Butler in the championship game of the 2010 men's basketball championship at Lucas Oil Field in Indianapolis. Of course it was a victory for the Blue Devils that was never fully sealed until Butler's Gordon Hayward had his half-court heave of a potential game-winning basket bank off the glass and skip off... Full story

  • Vijil says Shock will still probably awe

By PAUL DELANEY Staff Reporter If there's someone who has a real good idea of either how good – or bad – the Spokane Shock might be following their 74-62 loss to Milwaukee in the newly reorganized Arena Football League, it's former Eastern Washington University wide receiver Raul Vijil. That's because when it comes to being the leader in almost everything offensive for the past four seasons he's the team's No. 1 guy. A 4-year starter, Vijil holds the franchise record for receiving yards (3,869 yards), receptions (98), and... Full story

  • Medical Lake baseball riding pitching, defense for early success

By PAUL DELANEY Staff Reporter Medical Lake baseball is sure getting a lot out of a little. With just 10 players in uniform, the Cardinals have crafted a 3-0 record as they await the start of the Great Northern League season. When that will get underway, however, is difficult to say as the Cards' doubleheader this past Saturday against Deer Park was not only rained out then, but also this past Tuesday. It will likely be made up on Tuesday, April 27, head coach TJ Smith said. Medical Lake is scheduled to meet West Valley this...

  • Teens and gasoline don't mix in Cheney home fire

By BECKY THOMAS Staff Reporter Sometimes teenagers just don't think things through. That seems to be the case in any early morning March 28 fire in the 800 block of Moyer Street, when two teenage boys were pouring gasoline from various containers into a garbage bag. “Apparently they were trying to transfer the gas from the garbage sack into a vehicle, because one of the teens' vehicles was out of gas,” Cheney Fire Lt. Ken Johnson said. The boys were attempting this process in the basement of the home of one of the teens whi...
