  • Eastern hosts Weber State in critical Big Sky Conference game

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Nov 2, 2017

The numbers on paper favor visiting Weber State when they travel to Cheney to meet Eastern Washington Saturday at Roos Field for the 91st edition of Homecoming at the school. But the record on “The Red” always promises to be an equalizer. The Football Championship Subdivision’s No. 11-ranked Eagles are now 43-9 overall, having lost just five regular season games at “The Inferno” sporting a 33-5 record. Eastern is 54-33-3 in its previous 90 Homecoming contests, and last year...

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Nov 2, 2017

The Medical Lake football program and its second-year head coach Mo Owen remain in search of their first victory in two seasons following the Cardinals 42-8 loss to Lakeside last Friday. Fast-starting Lakeside (4-3 Northeast A, 5-3 overall) got four touchdown passes from quarterback Kasen Hunsacker, three of those in the first half, as the Eagles built a 28-0 halftime lead. The Eagles' Keaton Nowak scored three times, twice on runs and one on a TD pass from Hunsacker. The...

  • Cardinals advance in District 7 soccer playoffs

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Nov 2, 2017

Playing what head coach Zane Higgins called, “Our two most consistent games,” Medical Lake advanced in the District 7 soccer postseason. The Cardinals (9-8) got the performance it expects from Makayla Geiger who scored all three goals in a 3-0 victory over Colville Oct. 24 that propelled them into the double-elimination round where they opened at Lakeside, losing a disappointing 1-0 match Oct. 26 in a shootout. Medical Lake faces Freeman at 5:30 p.m. today at Spokane Fal...

In the process, Cheney will be sending two individuals and two relay teams to the 2A state meet Nov. 10-11 at the Federal Way Aquatics Center. Courtney Hanson and Isabell Williams both qualified for state in...

  • Lady Blackhawks VB await CWAC foe

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Nov 2, 2017

All it took was one win for the Cheney High volleyball team to punch its ticket to regional play this Saturday against the Central Washington Athletic Conference. The Lady Blackhawks got that, albeit not as easily as hoped, at the District 7 tournament last Saturday at Great Northern League champion Pullman High School. Cheney had to grind its way to a four-set win over fourth-seeded Clarkston, taking the first two 30-28 and 25-23 before the Bantams made things interesting with a 26-24 win in set three. The Lady Blackhawks re...

  • Cheney swimming continues to develop talent, success

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Nov 2, 2017

I’ve got to give a shout-out to the Cheney High School girls swimming team. In fact, a shout-out to Blackhawk swimmers of both genders through the years. I hope this doesn’t come out wrong, but if it does, don’t shoot me. Cheney’s swimming program has been somewhat of the odd-man (woman) out at times. It doesn’t have the prominence of sports more popular among the average fan, nor does it always benefit from club competition ingrained into other athletics such as soccer or volleyball. In fact, high school competiti...

  • Cheney soccer falls to West Valley in district playoffs

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Nov 2, 2017

Hoping to play more soccer in November, the Cheney High girls soccer team found its season ending in October - and for the second year in a row by the same opponent. Madeline Liberg gave the West Valley Eagles all they would need with a goal in the first half last Thursday on the Lady Blackhawks' pitch. Cheney goalkeeper Melissa Aris made an initial sliding stop of Liberg's breakaway shot in the 33rd minute, but couldn't hang on and the ball bounced slowly into the net giving...

  • Cheney girls peaking at the right time in cross country

    John McCallum|Updated Nov 2, 2017

The Cheney High girls cross country team’s train keeps rolling — with a final stop this coming Saturday at state 2A competition in Pasco at Sun Willows Golf Course. The Blackhawks posted some of their best three-mile times to hold off Great Northern League and District 7 champion West Valley and finish second in regional action with Central Washington Athletic Conference teams at Apple Ridge Golf Course in Cowiche. The top-four teams qualified for Saturday’s meet in Pasco. All five Cheney scoring runners turned in perso...

  • Cardinal boys eye repeat of state XC title

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Nov 2, 2017

There are no bold predictions from head coach Gene Blankenship on chances the Medical Lake boy's cross country team will add a third state championship to the school's trophy case this Saturday. Instead, Blankenship is traveling the safe path saying, "It's going to be between us, Meridian or Northwest," at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco for the 1A title. Meridian High is from Bellingham and Northwest is a private school near Seattle. The girls race starts at 10:30 a.m. with...
