  • Free-scoring Freeman flies past Medical Lake

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Oct 23, 2014

The Medical Lake Cardinals knew they faced a tall task in a Friday night Northeast A League football game at Freeman, the state’s No. 5 ranked team. Not only were the Scotties powerful, but they were angry, too, following their 28-7 loss to top-ranked Colville the week before. Freeman proved to be more than just a giant impediment and acted much like a steamroller, flattening Medical Lake 71-29. “All the stars and planets aligned for those guys,” Medical Lake head coach Wes H...

  • Cardinals still seeking first volleyball victory in 2014

    Updated Oct 23, 2014

By PAUL DELANEY Staff Reporter Four matches remain on the 2014 volleyball season for Medical Lake. And sometime in the next two weeks head coach Amanda Higgins hopes her team can find a way to start strong with a set victory. Because that’s what she thinks might be the catalyst that gets the winless Cardinals (0-10) headed in the right direction. “With four matches left, we are trying to figure out how to pull out that first game in the match,” Higgins wrote in an email. “We feel that if we win that first game then we can...

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Oct 23, 2014

Medical Lake, the state's top-ranked 1A team, breezed to its second straight Northeast A League cross country meet victory last Wednesday in a triple-dual event staged at Sontag Park in Nine Mile. The Cardinals had it easy, sweeping the top-5 places to take the boys' win 15-45 over home-standing Lakeside and 15-50 against Newport. The girls fell to Lakeside 21-35, but, like the boys, scored a 15-50 victory over Newport. Medical Lake senior Domenic Rehm clocked a 16 minute, 8...

  • Blackhawks face big test at District 7 cross country

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Oct 23, 2014

The injury and illness bugs have hit both Cheney High School cross country teams at just the wrong time — if there is such a thing as a good time. Several key runners were sidelined as the Blackhawks traveled to face a good Pullman team last Wednesday, Oct. 15. The Greyhounds, a team Cheney head coach Jay Martin said is much better than last year and were “home and hungry” ran great in downing the boys 25-34 as well as the girls 23-34. “We ran OK,” Martin said. “We were out a few kids. (But) I’m not making any excuses. We g...

  • Blackhawks' miscues lead to 17-14 Homecoming loss

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Oct 23, 2014

It's hard to win when you get triple-teamed. That was the case for the Cheney High School football team last Friday night, who not only found themselves battling a very good West Valley team but also themselves, and consequently the officials in a 17-14 Homecoming loss to the visiting Eagles. "It was a winnable game," Cheney head coach Bobby Byrd said. "We had opportunities and we let them slip away." Two of those opportunities came in the second quarter of a scoreless,...

  • EWU women have rugged 2014-15 basketball schedule

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Oct 23, 2014

Eastern Washington womens’ basketball head coach Wendy Schuller will tell you that in order to properly prepare for the tough grind of Big Sky Conference play that an equally difficult preseason schedule is in order. Considering that nine teams her Eagles will play in the lead up to the 2014-15 league schedule competed in the postseason last year, Eastern certainly ought to be battle-tested. “I feel like we’ve got to play teams out of conference that are going to chall...

  • Eastern tops stubborn Northern Colorado

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Oct 23, 2014

In a game where turnovers were seen as the key to victory, Eastern Washington won both battles last Saturday at Roos Field. Neither was by a big margin, however, in EWU’s 26-18 Big Sky Conference football victory over the Northern Colorado Bears before another sellout crowd of 10,064 on Military Appreciation Day. It was an interception by redshirt freshman Victor Gamboa — the only turnover lost by either team — with 2 minutes, 2 seconds to play that sealed the victory for E...

  • Harvin trade no big loss for Seahawks

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated Oct 23, 2014

The 2014 NFL trade deadline is less than a week away but the most recent deal had some big impacts. On Friday, Oct. 17, the Seattle Seahawks agreed to send wide receiver Percy Harvin to the New York Jets. In exchange for Harvin, the Seahawks will receive a sixth-round pick for the 2015 draft. After the announcement, most of my friends who are Seahawks fans were complaining about the trade. Some people learned about Harvin’s move in a different way. The Seattle players, heard about the situation while they were on their t...

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Oct 23, 2014

The Cheney girls' soccer team earned its first winning streak of the season, albeit briefly, with back to back wins last week at home over Pullman and East Valley. The Lady Blackhawks used the foot of forward Kendyl Cone and some stout defense to knock off the Greyhounds 4-1 Tuesday, and slipped by the Knights for a 1-0 win Thursday.
