  • Medical Lake suffers soccer setbacks

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Oct 22, 2015

Oh so close. For all but the waning minutes of last week’s Northeast A League soccer matches for Medical Lake, the Cardinals harbored thoughts of upset wins against two of the upper echelon teams they faced. But Medical Lake surrendered late goals in both contests, a 4-1 defeat at Deer Park (8-1 NEA, 9-1 overall) Oct. 13 and then again two days later, falling 3-1 to Lakeside (5-3, 5-5) at home last Thursday. Makayla Geiger scored in the 54th minute to tie the score 1-1 with t...

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Oct 22, 2015

Following an 0-2 week in Northeast A League volleyball play the season is slowly coming to a close with the postseason slipping from the grasp of Medical Lake. The Cardinals lost 3-0 at Deer Park Oct. 13 by scores of 25-14, 25-20 and 25-22 and then 3-0 at home to Lakeside, 6-25, 10-25 and 10-25 last Thursday, Oct. 15. “We lost a pretty tough one to Deer Park and as always Lakeside was a tough opponent,” Cardinals’ head coach Kari Knowlton said. Taylor Fritz led the Cardi...

  • Cardinals race past shorthanded Newport in cross country

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Oct 22, 2015

After miles and miles and miles of training and competition — too many perhaps to count — some dedicated Medical Lake cross country runners got their reward last Wednesday in their final home meet of the season. “I ran two seniors on varsity that have been with me for a long time,” head coach Gene Blankenship said of Jeremy Ryan and Alex Carl. Those two, along with first place individual finisher, Tyler Pena, helped the Cardinals roll over Newport 15-50 in a Northeast A Leagu...

  • Medical Lake falls to Freeman 36-13

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Oct 22, 2015

Medical Lake head football coach Wes Hobbs sensed there was a different air about his team as they prepared to face the Freeman Scotties last Friday night, Oct. 16, at Holliday Field. “Our kids seemed to have a different attitude going in and played through the end of the game with it,” Hobbs said. But a couple of brief stumbles turned what was a close game into a 36-13 Freeman Northeast A League victory, improving the Scotties to 4-1 in league play and 5-2 overall. The Car...

  • Eaton, McCauley lead Lady Blackhawks to first league win

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Oct 22, 2015

When it comes to winning in the Great Northern League, the Cheney High School girls’ soccer team is finally off the snide. The Lady Blackhawks got goals by Reba Eaton and Jasmine McCauley, and backed those up with solid defense to shutout Pullman 2-0 on the road Oct. 13 for the team’s first GNL win. Carla Thorson played a through ball to Eaton that the senior redirected around the Greyhound’s goalkeeper in the 11th minute for Cheney’s first score. McCauley provided some insurance in the 68th minute, blasting a shot from ne...

With only three Big Sky Conference matches left, the Eastern Washington University soccer team has two key contests this week, playing at Northern Colorado this Friday, Oct. 23, before returning home to face North Dakota on Sunday, Oct. 25, at 1 p.m. The Eagles earned a split this past week, topping Northern Arizona, 4-2, last Friday, Oct. 16, and falling to Southern Utah, 1-0, on Sunday, Oct. 18. Despite sitting in the top three in the conference standings, the defeat to SUU prevented Eastern from clinching a spot in the...

  • Eagles head for unfamiliar territory, turf

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Oct 22, 2015

It's back to the Mountain Time Zone for the second straight week, but this time a place that to many Eastern Washington University football players is a complete mystery. The No. 7 ranked Eagles return to Nottingham Field in Greeley, Colo. Saturday for a Big Sky Conference for the first time since 2010, and play on old-fashioned grass. Not one member of the current EWU team has played the Bears before on the road. Eastern is fresh off a 45-28 win at Idaho State last Saturday...

  • The Shock logo shakedown

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Oct 22, 2015

The crazy went to bizarre. That’s what arena league football is all about anyway, but generally during the season. On Oct. 19 it was officially announced that after 10 years, the Spokane Shock would no longer be known as the Shock. It’s got nothing to do with the need to totally rebrand the team that has sought asylum in the Indoor Football League for the 2016 season. Just what the crumbling Arena Football League will gain by playing hardball with the Shock by putting its nam...

  • Cheney volleyball goes 1-1 in GNL play, drops from lead

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated Oct 22, 2015

The Cheney High volleyball team’s place at the top of the Great Northern League standings was short-lived after a 3-1 loss to Pullman, Oct. 13. They rebounded to defeat East Valley, 3-1, Oct. 15. The game scores for the Pullman match were 18-25, 25-22, 28-30 and 25-27. Head coach Heather Zorrozua said her team spent the first set “getting their feet wet” as they were playing in Pullman’s new gym for the first time. “We had some momentum at the end of the first set and carried that over into the second game,” Zorrozua said. Sh...

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated Oct 22, 2015

The Cheney High football team continues to tear through their Great Northern League opponents, after coming from behind to defeat West Valley, 27-15, Oct. 16. The Blackhawks snapped the Eagles’ three-game winning streak and handed them their first league loss. After a fake punt on their first offensive drive, West Valley got on the scoreboard with Johnny Sage’s 1-yard rushing touchdown. Cheney answered with a 36-yard rushing touchdown from Ty Graham to make the score 7-6. Chase Howat’s 23-yard field goal gave West Valle...

  • Blackhawk boys capture first outright GNL title

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Oct 22, 2015

The last time the Cheney High School boys cross country team finished first in the Great Northern League was 2007, and they had to share their triumph with West Valley and Colville. This time, the Blackhawks are all alone at the top. Thanks to a 24-31 win over visiting Pullman High in the regular-season ending league dual meet Oct. 14, the Cheney boys have captured their first GNL regular season title since joining the league in 2006. The Blackhawks placed all five scoring...
