Lucas Walsh, Cheney Free Press|Updated Oct 12, 2022

CHENEY – Lenny's Classic Restaurant has closed down and will go up for sale at the end of October. Owner Allan Gainer cites economic shifts such as inflation and a reduction in expendable income as factors in his decision to close the business. Rising food costs also took a toll on the sustainability of the restaurant. In the past, Lenny's was known for its milkshakes, Stromboli, and the popular "bag'o burgers." All of these items were revived by Gainer when he acquired the b...

The move comes as fuel prices continue to increase and bus drivers continue to be in short supply. The School Board discussed seeking legislative support for walk zone improvements, enforcement of “1-mile walk zones,” and HopSkipDrive. HopSkipDrive is a private transportation company that partners with school districts to provide transportation to student...

  • Information campaign on aging and long-term care is wise; taking more earnings from workers isn't

    Elizabeth Hovde, Contributor|Updated Oct 6, 2022

There wasn’t much notice for August’s webinar hosted by the WA Cares Fund. It was titled, “Long-Term Care Planning for Near-Retirees.” I finally went back for a watch. In addition to presentations from government employees about changes that were made for near-retirees in the last legislative session when it comes to WA Cares — the new social program supporters and public agency heads are trying to pass off as an insurance policy for workers, even calling a new payroll tax a “premium” — there also were helpful presentations f...

Paul Delaney, Cheney Free Press|Updated Oct 6, 2022

At first glance Cheney’s heartbreaking 12-10 Greater Spokane League football loss to Lewis and Clark at Union Stadium in Mead came as result of a blocked field goal. But Blackhawks’ head coach Bobby Byrd knows better. “People look at a game and may think it comes down to one play, but as well as we did play, we could have taken advantage of other opportunities earlier in the game,” Byrd wrote in an email. The Tigers’ James Sheridan will someday maybe have a story to tell his...

  • Worst Seat in the House

    Dale Anderson, Contributor|Updated Oct 6, 2022

A month ago EWU played Tennessee State and part way through the second half a storm passed by and the fans were instructed to leave the stadium because of lightning strikes nearby. So we did. My buddy Ken and I went to my car while others stood outside throwing footballs or reconnecting at a tailgate party. So that was a late summer storm for eastern Washington. Just this past Saturday the Eagles were scheduled to play the University of Florida Gators in Gainesville. This game was originally scheduled when former EWU QB Jim...
