  • Medical Lake melts in final quarter at Deer Park

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Oct 2, 2014

Suffice to say the Medical Lake football team ran out of gas and bodies last Friday in their 34-20 Northeast A League football loss at Deer Park. After building a 20-7 lead going into the final quarter, the Cardinals (0-2 NEA, 1-3 overall) simply could not control the ball, or the clock and saw the Stags (2-0, 2-2) score 27 points in 11 minutes. “We just broke down in the fourth quarter,” Medical Lake head coach Wes Hobbs said. The score sheet and stats will tell you it was a...

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Oct 2, 2014

This past Saturday in Portland, Medical Lake head cross country coach Gene Blankenship and his team got to see what the future just might look like come November at the state championships. Both the Cardinal boys and girls ran at the Nike Pre Nationals at the Portland Meadows horse race track and earned some impressive finishes — and got to scout their most likely toughest competition in Pasco. The Medical Lake girls surprised everyone with their runner-up finish to m...

  • Cardinal volleyball trying to put all the parts together

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Oct 2, 2014

The parts seem to be there for Medical Lake volleyball. It seems to be a matter of just finding how they all fit together. The Cardinals are winless after four Northeast A League matches, losing 3-0 each to Colville, Deer Park, Lakeside and Newport. “We have good things going but are still working on pulling everything together so it all happens at once,” head coach Amanda Higgins wrote in an email. In their 25-9, 25-18, 25-20 loss at home last Thursday to Newport (2-2 NEA...

  • Cheney plays 'clean' for first volleyball win

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated Oct 2, 2014

The Cheney high volleyball team snapped a three-match losing streak after defeating West Valley at home in Great Northern League (GNL) play, Sept. 23, to pick up their first win of the season. Two days later they dropped a league match to the Pullman Greyhounds. In the match against West Valley, the Blackhawks turned in an impressive performance, with winning scores 25-20, 25-16 and 25-21. Head coach Courtney Webb said her team played “really clean” defense, which helped the setters set up the hitters. Setter Peyton Sta...

  • Visit from rebuilding Idaho State worries Baldwin

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Oct 2, 2014

Eastern Washington head coach Beau Baldwin is quick to point out that the Idaho State team, which visits Roos Field Saturday for a 1:35 p.m. kickoff for Hall of Fame Day, is not the same Bengals you might be used to seeing. The Mike Kramer-coached team is not the one that has struggled for a number of years and have lost seven straight times to Eastern if you ask Baldwin. “Over the course of the years you’ve gotten to see it grow and this year I think it’s been maybe the b...

  • Lady Blackhawks break into win column against Pullman, 3-1

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Oct 2, 2014

That goose egg in the Cheney High School girls’ soccer team’s win column is a thing of the past. The Lady Blackhawks got a hat trick — three goals — from forward/midfielder Sarah Fix last Thursday to pull out a 3-1 road win over the Pullman Greyhounds, giving Cheney it’s first win of the season. Fix’s first two goals in the 14th and 18th minutes were virtually identical, deflections off the Greyhounds goalkeeper that bounced out about 25 yards that the senior chipped back in for scores. The third, in the 75th minute afte...

  • Eastern starts slow, finishes strong

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Oct 2, 2014

It took a while, but once the Eastern Washington University offense finally pried the ball away from the University of California-Davis to start the second half, the Eagles cruised to a 37-14 Big Sky Conference football victory last Saturday in Davis, Calif. Throughout the first half of the game at Aggies' Stadium, it was ball control that helped UCD stay with Eastern. The Aggies had four possessions that gave them the ball for over 16 of the opening 30 minutes, but that accou...

  • Everyone loves a good comeback story in sports

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated Oct 2, 2014

One of the many fascinating things about sports, mainly boxing or mixed martial arts, is the comeback story. Everyone loves a good comeback story. Most sports movies, especially about boxing or MMA, focus on an athlete who is either close or at rock bottom. The audience spends the next 1-2 hours following the fighter as they climb the ladder to the top despite stumbling along the way. These movies include “Cinderella Man,” “Rocky” and “The Fighter.” In real life, combat sports are full of athletes who are on the path to red...
