Medical Lake’s cross country team sought out new conquests last Saturday. And the Cardinals got what they wanted scoring an impressive victory at the 19th annual Wenatchee Invitational. The 1A Cardinals, who outscored 4A Wenatchee 47-54 to win the boys’ team title, were the defending boys’ champions at Clarkston’s Seaport Invite. “We defeated two good 4A teams and one 3A team,” head coach Gene Blankenship said. Hanford, a 2A school, was third (92 points) and local school, 3A...

And so far, three games into the season, all nonleague, the Cardinals head into Northeast A League play seeking both their first victory, and goal. ML hosts Freeman next Tuesday, Oct. 1 and then Newport, Thursday, Oct. 3, both at 4 p.m. at the soccer field at Medical Lake High School. “It takes a little bit extra time to get over the basic stu...

  • Cheney girls swimming gets good footing

    JAMES EIK, Staff Reporter|Updated Sep 27, 2013

The Cheney girls’ swim team is gaining some good experience on the road, and will participate in their first home meet this week at the Eastern Washington University pool. The team has performed in two contests thus far, the Ephrata Jamboree and a match against Ellensburg. The Ephrata meet didn’t affect Cheney’s rankings, and offered a chance for some of the novice swimmers to get some hands-on experience in a real competition setting. Cheney did take second in the 200 yard medley relay, with a time of 2:05.99, just a littl...

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Sep 27, 2013

Medical Lake volleyball earned its first Northeast A League volleyball victory of the season last week with a 3-0 sweep of Chewelah. Their win, 25-22, 25-22, 27-25 over the Cougars at home was also the Cardinals’ first NEA win since their return to the league in 2012. Coupled with a 3-0 loss at Lakeside last Tuesday, Medical Lake is 1-3 in league play. “This win was a team effort,” head coach Amanda Higgins said. “All the girls played hard and the hard work paid off.” Medical...

  • Lady Hawks look to put blowouts behind them with renewed intensity

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Sep 27, 2013

For Cheney girls’ soccer head coach Nils Radtke, what’s in the past is just that – in the past. Over with, done, time to move on. The Lady Hawks got blitzed in a pair of losses last week, 5-0 in non-league action at 1A Lakeside and 7-0 at Great Northern League opponent East Valley. In both games Cheney fell behind early and fell behind big before the half, getting out shot by their opponents 29-6. “Those are over with and the good news is we’re still 2-1 in league,” Radtke said. “It’s a new week. It’s a great opportunity...

  • Eagles, Bearkats tangle in football 'biggie' in Huntsville

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Sep 27, 2013

The “Unfinished Business” T-shirts many Eastern Washington University football players wear had their inspiration from last December’s 45-42 semifinal playoff loss at Roos Field to Sam Houston State University. The loss to the Bearkats, despite the furious second-half rally from a 35-0 halftime deficit by scoring 42 points, stalled the Eagles’ quest for a return to Frisco, Texas where they won the 2010 FCS National championship. Hence the unfinished business theme. Redshir...

Spokane match. “They’re a big school and they have a lot of talent, so we knew we had to come in and be aggressive.” The first set of the match...

  • Blackhawks bury Lakeland 27-9

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Sep 27, 2013

Smothering defense and an opportunistic offense propelled Cheney to a 27-9 win over Idaho 4A school Lakeland in the Blackhawks football home opener last Friday night at Tom Oswald Field. Quarterback Andrew Graham scored on a 1-yard run and hooked up with wide receiver Logan Clayden on a 16-yard TD pass as the Blackhawks built a 17-3 halftime lead and held on to go 3-0 for the second time in three years. “We stuck to our game plan to control the ball and control the line of s...
