During her primary education years, Agnes's family moved around as...

  • Eagles travel to meet UC Davis Aggies for first time

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Sep 25, 2014

There are not many places new to the Eastern Washington University football team these days. They’ve traveled across the country to far away places in West Virginia and Texas, among others. Grand Forks, N.D. is not an easy place to reach, nor is Cedar Falls, home of Northern Iowa University. But this Saturday the Eagles test entirely new territory and surroundings when they travel to Davis, Calif. and the 10,700-seat Aggies Stadium. There they meet UC Davis in their Big Sky C...

  • Medical Lake crushed 50-14 by Colville, Colton Vining

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Sep 25, 2014

As Medical Lake head football coach Wes Hobbs sized up the Colville Indians prior to their meeting in last Friday's Northeast A League opener at Holliday Field he knew about their size and power. "They're going to push you around and outnumber you," he said. The speed the visitors exhibited in their 50-14 thumping of the Cards proved to be impressive, too. That came specifically from running Colville back Colton Vining who scored five times in the first 21 minutes of the game...

  • Cardinal girls have strong finish in Wenatchee

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Sep 25, 2014

Medical Lake’s cross country team took a big step forward, and a little one back at the Wenatchee Invitational staged at Walla Walla Park along the Columbia River. The Cardinal girls surprised their coach with their runner-up finish in a six-team field, falling by a single point to host Wenatchee. The Medical Lake boys were a distant second to 4A Wenatchee 38-74 on the 3-mile course. Medical Lake’s girls got three top-10 finishes, the best from Mariah Pena, a 20 minute, 25....

  • First win escapes Cheney with close losses to Clarkston, Shadle

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Sep 25, 2014

While the Lady Blackhawks are still looking for their first win of the 2014 season, they may be getting closer. Cheney dropped a pair of soccer matches last week, both coming on the road. The Lady Blackhawks held Clarkston scoreless in the first half, but three minutes into the second frame gave up a goal to Bailee Wohl that proved to be enough in the Bantams 2-0 win last Tuesday. Clarkston’s Maddie Hoffman added another goal late in the game. Thursday the Lady Blackhawks traveled to Spokane Falls Community College to face G...

  • Cheney runners down Knights for first league win

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Sep 25, 2014

It was a pretty good week for the Cheney High School boys and girls cross country teams in their first official foray into the regulation, 5,000-meter racing category. The Blackhawks surprised a few people, including head coach Jay Martin, with wins Wednesday afternoon in dual-meet competition at Salnave Park with Great Northern League contender East Valley. The teams followed that up with another multi-team meet strong showing by finishing fifth (boys) and sixth (girls) at...

  • Volleyball drops matches to Clarkston, N.W. Christian

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated Sep 25, 2014

The Cheney High volleyball team continued to experience some hardships on the road after they dropped a Great Northern League (GNL) match to Clarkston 3-1, Sept. 16, and then lost a nonleague contest against Northwest Christian 3-1, two days later. The game scores of the Clarkston match were 25-20, 25-20, 20-25 and 25-22. Although the Blackhawks lost to the Bantams, head coach Courtney Webb said her team played one of its best matches of the season. “They were aggressive and willing to hustle,” Webb said. “Every set was close...

  • Cheney swimming beats Ellensburg in home opener

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated Sep 25, 2014

The Cheney high girls swimming team had a successful home opener, Sept. 20, by defeating Ellensburg 87-82. The Blackhawks kicked off the meet with a bang as the team of Makenzie Norman, Alexis Schmidt, Tenley Nelson and Brittany Meyer took first in the 200-yard medley relay. They finished in 2 minutes and 2.71 seconds, qualifying them for state. Cheney also did well in the other relay events. The team of Meyer, Kaylie Geschke, Melissa Johnson and Izzy Corlett came in second...

  • Kline leads Blackhawks past Lakeland 21-10

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Sep 25, 2014

You've got to have some trust in what you're doing in order to achieve success. The Cheney High School football team found that out in a big way last Friday on the road at Idaho's 4A classification Lakeland. The Blackhawks trusted their defense to keep the then-undefeated Hawks (3-1) high-powered offense in check long enough for Cheney's offense to get in gear - which they did in the second half en route to a 21-10 non-league win. After gaining just 10 yards on the ground in...

  • So many questions surround domestic abuse in pro sports

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Sep 25, 2014

It’s difficult to know what to make of the domestic violence issues taking place right now in professional sports. I say professional sports, knowing the recent spate of incidents are in the National Football League, but there are likely some in other sports too. At least, I know of one involving an athlete in Olympic women’s soccer — Hope Solo. I know some people have already formed opinions. At least about what’s taken place in the NFL. Judgment on (former) Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice’s guilt regarding the assau...

  • Eagles top Bobcats in the end at Bozeman

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Sep 25, 2014

All things pointed to last Saturday being the day Montana State head coach Rob Ash and his Bobcats just might figure out a way to send Eastern Washington home disappointed. The Eagles' engine, star quarterback Vernon Adams, seemed to not be firing on all cylinders - again - at Bobcat Stadium in Bozeman. With 1 minute, 15 seconds remaining in the game Adams seemed to have chugged to a stop and faced a fourth and 10 at his own 39-yard line. "I really thought after the first...
