  • EWU wins third straight in soccer

    Updated Sep 17, 2015

The Eastern Washington University soccer team recorded its third straight victory, topping Green Bay 4-2, Sept. 13. Eastern got a pair of goals from Chloe Williams and singles from Lexi Klinkenberg and freshman Devan Talley. The Eagles improve their record to 5-1-1 while the Phoenix drop to 2-5-0 and played at the University of Illinois-Chicago this past Wednesday to conclude nonleague play. For her efforts on the road trip Williams was named the Big Sky Conference Offensive Player of the Week, the league office announced...

  • Medical Lake's Nathan Davis was in the best of hands Friday

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Sep 17, 2015

With 8 minutes, 32 seconds remaining in last Friday’s football game between Medical Lake and visiting St. Maries the action on the field suddenly came to a halt when Cardinals’ lineman, junior Nate Davis, did not get up out of a pile following a tackle. Officials summoned the Medical Lake training staff to the field, who in turn called on the city’s emergency medical crew that watched from their vehicle outside the south end zone. “They kept the neck stable and took care of...

  • Cardinals lose focus in soccer losses

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Sep 17, 2015

Youth is what will eventually help bring success to the Medical Lake girl’s soccer program, but there are growing pains along the way. That’s how it was as the Cardinals opened their 2015 season with a pair of nonleague losses, 5-1 at home to St. Georges, Sept. 10 and 4-0 on the road in Pullman, Sept. 12. “We started off real well,” head coach Zane Higgins said. “We had five or six really good goal scoring opportunities in the first 10-15 minutes of the game.” The Cardinals t...

  • Big plays doom Medical Lake in loss to St. Maries

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Sep 17, 2015

Medical Lake head football coach Wes Hobbs shook his head after looking at the stats report from last Friday’s nonleague football game at Holliday Field with visiting St. Maries. His Cardinals dominated so many of the categories, winning the total yardage 349-276, time of possession by nearly 10 minutes and a 14-6 edge in first downs. Yet when the horn sounded the Lumberjacks assured themselves of a fun trip in the winding roads back to Idaho after scoring a 42-12 win. M...

  • Lady Blackhawks defeat East Valley in Great Northern opener

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated Sep 17, 2015

The Cheney High volleyball team began their season with a busy week, competing in the Lakeside jamboree, Sept. 9, defeating 2014 Great Northern League champions East Valley, 3-1, Sept. 10, and finishing 1-3-1 in the Lakeland Invite, Sept. 12. In the jamboree, Cheney defeated Deer Park and lost to Lakeside. Individual statistics and scores were unavailable as of press time. Head coach Heather Zorrozua said the jamboree gave the Lady Blackhawks a chance to apply some of the techniques and strategies they learned in practice, as...

  • Blackhawks' Norman, Schmidt qualify for state

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated Sep 17, 2015

The Cheney High girls swim team traveled to Moses Lake, Saturday Sept. 12, to compete in the Twilight Jamboree, where two Blackhawks qualified for the 2A state championships in November. Junior Makenzie Norman, who captured a state title last year, qualified for her third trip to state after she finished first in the 50-yard freestyle in 56.60 seconds. She and fellow junior Alexis Schmidt qualified for state in the 100 butterfly. Schmidt, who also earned her third state trip, finished second in 1:03.12 while Norman took...

  • Eastern is back home to face Bobcats

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Sep 17, 2015

Eastern Washington limps back home, winless after two games, to face the 11th-ranked and Big Sky Conference title co-favorite, Montana State (1-0) in a 1 p.m. kickoff Saturday at Roos Field. While the two are conference rivals, because of some scheduling quirks, this game does not count in league standings. But it’s critical for Eastern who tries to rebound after losses at Pac-12 Oregon (61-42) in week one and 38-35 to Northern Iowa, a Football Championship Subdivision team f...

  • Scoring hard to come by in Lady Blackhawks first two games

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Sep 17, 2015

Cheney High School girls soccer head coach Nels Radtke was provided the opportunity to watch his Lady Blackhawks first two games from a unique vantage point — from the stands as a fan rather than the sidelines as a coach. Radtke and assistant coach Matt Pollack were suspended from coaching the first two games due to red cards they received last year in questioning officials’ calls during Cheney’s playoff loss to Clarkston. With assistant coach Jesse Ratan calling the shots against Ferris and East Valley last week, Radtk...

  • Medical Lake excels with Highlander Invite finish

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Sep 17, 2015

After seeing most of his two-time defending champion state 1A cross country team largely decimated by graduation, Medical Lake head coach Gene Blankenship was going to be happy with more simple goals, such as simply qualifying for this year's event Nov. 7 in Pasco. Following the Cardinals' overall finish by the boy's team at last Saturday's Highlander Invitational, Blankenship is rethinking things. "If you merge all the times on the boy's, we finished sixth overall,"...

  • Junior boys lead Blackhawks at Highlander

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Sep 17, 2015

For a first meet, they performed well. That was the assessment of Cheney High School cross country coaches Camille Moseley and Derek Slaughter of the Blackhawks performances at last Saturday's 35-team Highlander Invitational, run on the 2.5-mile course at Shadle Park High School. There were of course some standouts. The first for both coaches was the Blackhawks junior boys, who finished third as a team in what would prove to be the day's fastest race. Leading Cheney was Drake...

  • Seahawks come with plenty of questions this season

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated Sep 17, 2015

Dear Seattle Seahawks fans, It’s not the end of the world. I understand that many fans were up in arms this last Sunday after the Seahawks lost to the St. Louis Rams, 34-31, in overtime. For some, it was a continuation of the heartache of Seattle’s 28-24 loss to the New England Patriots in last year’s Super Bowl. Some folks are probably upset because it should have been an easy win for Seattle. Many experts predict the Rams won’t make the postseason and called the Seattle win an upset, even though some experts label St. Lou...

  • Cheney football stumps Stags, 13-7

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated Sep 17, 2015

Defense was key in the Cheney High football team's 13-7 non-league win over the Northeast A League's Deer Park Stags, Sept. 11. After a scoreless first half, that included a failed field goal attempt from the Blackhawks, Ty Graham picked up a fumble early in the third quarter, taking it to Deer Park territory. Graham followed it up with a rushing touchdown to give the Blackhawks the lead, 7-0. Deer Park answered with a rushing touchdown to tie the game at 7-7. In the fourth...

Our dear Mom entered into eternal rest Sept. 7, 2015 in Spokane, Wash. She and her late husband Donald built their Betz Road house in 1973 and lived there for 34 years. After traveling the U.S. and overseas with her Air Force husband, she finally had a permanent house and some land to call her own. It was always with great pleasure for us kids to visit with mom and dad out in the country in their big house. She was an avid volunteer in many organizations in Cheney and Spokane. Left here on earth to mourn her are 10 of 11...
