Eastern volleyball plays at Idaho tourney Off to its best start in eight years, the Eastern Washington University women’s volleyball team looks to continue its winning ways with a trio of matches this weekend as part of the Idaho Tournament in Moscow, Idaho. EWU (4-2) opens play against the University of Portland at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 12. The following day sees the Eagles square off with national power Missouri at 9:30 a.m. before facing Boise State at 4:30 p.m. that afternoon. Eastern is coming off a successful 11-day tri...

  • Eagles fall short – again – against Huskies

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Sep 11, 2014

In a game dominated by big numbers on the scoreboard and stats report, the latest non-conference loss by the Eastern Washington University football team to the Pac-12's University of Washington was decided by some really small ones. Two Eagles' turnovers led directly to Husky touchdowns. And Eastern's defense was only able to stop Washington drives and force punts twice in a 59-52 shootout last Saturday at Husky Stadium. If entertaining counts at all, the Eagles, now 2-1,...

  • Cards tune-up at Davenport, play in Freeman Tourney

    PAUL DELANEY|Updated Sep 11, 2014

Medical Lake’s girl’s volleyball team kicked off its 2014 season competing in the Davenport Tournament last Saturday. “We played Bridgeport, Davenport, Omak and Almira-Coulee-Hartline,” head coach Amanda Higgins said. “We lost all four matches, however we played pretty good.” No scores or stats were available. The initial outing allowed Higgins to give the team an opportunity to play multiple positions, she said. “We did get a little tired by the end of the day but all in al...

  • Cheney drops soccer opener to Ferris at Albi Stadium

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Sep 11, 2014

If there’s a silver lining in the Cheney High School girls soccer team’s 6-0 loss Monday against Ferris, head coach Nels Radtke thinks he’s found it. “It was a good thing for us to see where we’re at,” Radtke said Tuesday. The Saxons of the Greater Spokane League’s 4A classification scored three goals in the first 19 minutes of play at Joe Albi Stadium, and finished with three more goals in the final seven minutes of the game for the win. Between those spans, Radtke thinks his team played fairly well against a team that is mo...

  • Blackhawks drop season opener at Colville

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Sep 11, 2014

For the first game of the season, Cheney High School football head coach Bobby Byrd doesn’t think his Blackhawks did all that bad. Cheney played well defensively but couldn’t get rolling on the offensive side of the ball in a 12-10 non-league loss on the road at Colville last Friday. The Indians, who dropped down from the 2A Great Northern League to the Northeast A League this season, used tight splits and a ball-control rushing attack to control the clock and limit Cheney’s offensive possessions. “Colville had a game pl...

  • Fans choose football teams for variety of reasons

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated Sep 11, 2014

The NFL kicked off another regular season last week with last year’s Super Bowl champions the Seattle Seahawks defeating the Green Bay Packers, Thursday, Sept. 4. My social media feeds were flooded with pictures of friends donning their blue and bright green jerseys and status updates invoking the spirit of the 12th Man. Most of my relatives are Seattle fans and they recently converted my brother-in-law to the Church of the Seahawks. It’s easy to see why most of my friends in Spokane and Cheney would follow the Seahawks. Mos...

  • Tappero leads Cardinals over Orofino 40-31

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Sep 11, 2014

Medical Lake head football coach Wes Hobbs had a questions as his team approached their season opening game last Friday against visiting Orofino, from Idaho. When the horn sounded following the Cardinals 40-31 victory over the Maniacs, many of those questions were answered. Foremost among Hobbs' concerns was how his offensive line might come together with a blend of just two veterans and plenty of fresh faces. And then how they might handle a large Orofino defensive front....

  • What is the true poverty rate in America?

    EMILY CLEATH, Contributor|Updated Sep 11, 2014

A picture of you standing in front of your dirty car doesn’t mean that your car has always been and always will be dirty — or that it’s dirty because of some personal failure of yours. Nor does it mean you’re the only person around whose vehicle may become less than sparkling. But that is the impression many have of people living in poverty in the U.S. because of the oft-cited 15 percent figure: that the minority of people with little to no money who are captured in a yearly government income and poverty report are the sam...

  • West Plains has enormous potential for our economic future

    REP. JEFF HOLY, Contributor|Updated Sep 11, 2014

In the early 1960s, I attended grade school at St. Anthony in Renton. Catholic schools attracted students from quite a large area, so a number of kids in my class were from the Kent valley. I well remember a classmate whose family owned a dairy in the Kent area telling me that his family had just sold their dairy for over a million dollars. The amount made quite an impression on me and even then, the idea of a local farm being worth so much money was confusing. I was too young to understand that correctly zoned land that was...

  • It's time to stop the foreign policy crisis intervention cycle

    Updated Sep 11, 2014

If you feel every time you get up in the morning there’s a new foreign policy crisis facing the nation, you’re not alone. It can be dizzying how a confrontation in one area of the world is quickly replaced by conflict in another area. Often these seem to happen simultaneously. Russia’s invasion of the Crimea has now turned into a near-civil war in the Ukraine. Israel invades the Gaza Strip — again — and while there is currently a cease fire, we all know how long those tend to last. Battling terrorism in Iraq and a civil war...

  • Camp Selah provides after-school program

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated Sep 11, 2014

Medical Lake students who are looking for something to do after school can go to the Selah Day Scouts Day Camp after-school program at the Jensen Youth Memorial Ranch, 961 N. Stanley St. The after-school program is for K-6 grade boys and girls, and sanctioned by Medical Lake Girl Scout Troop 3673. Kathy Van Aken, a leader for Troop 3673, is one of the facilitators of the program. She said Camp Selah gives children a chance to have help with their homework or play outside. "The...
