  • Carlon is new Lady Hawks BB coach

    Updated Sep 8, 2016

The Cheney High School athletic department announced Sept. 6 that former West Valley girls basketball coach Lorin Carlon has been named as the Lady Blackhawks new head coach. Carlon retired from West Valley at the end of the 2016 season after 13 seasons leading the Lady Eagles. Before coming to Millwood, Carlon spent one year at Tekoa-Oaksdale after coaching for 14 years at his alma mater, St. John-Endicott. At St. John, he led the 1995-1996 Eagles to a perfect 28-0 record and a Class B state championship. In a CHS news...

  • Freshmen lead Cheney soccer to victory over Mt. Spokane

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated Sep 8, 2016

Freshmen power helped the Cheney High girls’ soccer team win their Sept. 2 season opener over Greater Spokane League’s Mt. Spokane, 2-1. It was the first time the Lady Blackhawks’ had won their season opener since their 5-3 victory over Rogers on Sept. 7, 2013. “They’ve worked so hard for this for so long,” Radtke said. “We came out with a lot of fire.” Freshman Kailey Estrellado scored the first goal of her high school career in the 13th minute after she chipped one over the goalkeeper from 25 feet away. Fellow freshman...

  • Cards shine, stumble in Owen's debut

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Sep 8, 2016

A lot went wrong in Mo Owen’s high school head coaching debut for Medical Lake, a 29-24 loss on the road to the Kellogg Wildcats, Sept. 2. The good news is that what led to the defeat is fixable, Owen said of his Cardinals, who sprinkled a number of bright spots amidst some stumbles that ultimately decided the game. Kellogg (1-1) from Idaho’s Intermountain League, got three touchdowns from running back Ryan Morgan, including the score that put host team in the lead for goo...

  • Respecting Jeremy Lane's and other athletes right to protest

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated Sep 8, 2016

Seahawks’ cornerback Jeremy Lane made headlines this past week during Seattle’s Sept. 1 preseason game against the Oakland Raiders — but it wasn’t anything he had done in the game that caught people’s attention. Before the first quarter, Lane was sitting down during the playing of the national anthem. During postgame interviews, Lane said he sat down, mostly out of respect for San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick. Kaepernick has the eyes of the world on him after he was pictured not standing during the “Star Spa...

  • Cheney loses football opener to 4A Sunnyside, 20-7

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated Sep 8, 2016

The Cheney High football team lost their Sept. 2 home opener to 4A Columbia Basin Big-Nine's Sunnyside, 20-7 in a nonleague game that was delayed due to weather. During one of Cheney's drives in a rainy first quarter, lightning flashed above Tom Oswald Field, causing officials to delay the game for about an hour. After a scoreless first quarter, the Grizzlies got on the scoreboard on Nico Valle's 16-yard scoring pass to Hugo Reyes to lead 6-0 in the first half. Sunnyside added...

  • Eastern, North Dakota State renew rivalry

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Sep 8, 2016

There’s plenty of mystique surrounding Saturday’s nonconference football game between Eastern Washington and North Dakota State in Fargo at the raucous Fargodome. But revenge for the Bison is not one of the elements in the second-ever meeting between the two schools for a couple of reasons, following their 38-31 overtime loss to Eastern in a blinding snowstorm. First, as EWU head coach Beau Baldwin pointed out this past Monday at the weekly coach’s show, the players who will...

  • Eastern Washington 45, WSU 42

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Sep 8, 2016

The All-American did what most people expected. The new starting quarterback certainly overachieved in the eyes of everyone, except, perhaps, himself and his coach. And the defense, much-maligned as the 2015 season ended, bent but never broke. Combined, these were some of the parts that helped manufacture Eastern Washington's 45-42 season-opening nonconference football victory over Washington State before a sold out Martin Stadium crowd of 32,952 last Saturday, Sept. 3. The wi...

  • Looking Back

    Updated Sep 8, 2016

1 Years Ago Sept. 7, 2006 Medical Lake residents continued reporting vehicle prowlings to local police as these incidents and other crimes of opportunity occurred in greater numbers around the school year. Cheney Auto Care moved into its new Betz Road location west of Starbucks and just south and west of the Holiday Inn Express. It was previously located near Cheney U-Haul, but the facility was too small for the expanding business. Two unidentified naked males wearing Halloween masks went streaking through the Cheney...
