    NEWS SERVICES REPORTS|Updated Jul 23, 2015

It may not count in the conference standings, but Sept. 19 will be an intriguing day in the Big Sky Conference football race. Eastern Washington University and Montana State are the split-vote favorites to win the conference title in 2015, and will play each other in a non-conference game at Roos Field on Sept. 19. The three-time defending conference champion Eagles were selected to win the conference title by the media, while the conference’s head coaches picked Montana State. • Kids can sometimes bring something extra to routine press events

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated Jul 23, 2015

Although it doesn’t lead to the most exciting evenings, I can’t pass up a chance to watch free mixed martial arts or boxing events. Last weekend, UFC featured a Titan Fighting Championships event on its Fight Pass network. The card — which lasted a good five-and-a half hours — featured 12 bouts, four of those title matches. One of the better fights featured Tim Elliott, a former UFC fighter, who broke a two-fight skid to win the vacant Titan FC flyweight championship. The post-fight celebration wasn’t anything I hadn’t se...

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Jul 23, 2015

In the end and despite a number of high points, the Spokane Blue Devils AAA American Legion baseball team will consider their 2015 season one where they just might have underachieved. The Blue Devils season came to an end in the playoffs for the Spokane league losing 14-5 to the Northstars, beating the N.E. 49ers 10-0 in a July 13 doubleheader but being eliminated 10-0 by the Cannons July 14 in the double-elimination tournament. “I’m sure everyone would say this. We all had...

Cheney was set to play Omak, July 16, however the game was never officially scheduled. The Summerhawks’ offense struggled against Cashmere early in the game. After being down 9-1 in the fifth inning, Cheney got their bats going to score two runs. “Cashmere is a good fundamental team, they’re very respe...

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Jul 23, 2015

Time has admittedly flown by for Eastern Washington University's athletic director Bill Chaves. Chaves recently passed his eight-year mark on the job and it's been a most memorable run punctuated by some of the biggest successes in the athletic history of the school. "We've had some really unique and tremendous things happen over the course of those eight years," Chaves said. "It's been rewarding; I'm excited to see what happens in the next eight years." • LOOKING BACK WITH THE CHENEY HISTORICAL MUSEUM

    Updated Jul 23, 2015

Fifty years ago in 1965, the new Interstate 90 freeway bypassed Four Lakes, Cheney, and Tyler. The freeway was a mixed blessing. Businesses certainly felt the loss as fewer travelers came through town, and residents were attracted with easy access to stores in Spokane.
