  • Gray battles back into National Finals picture

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Jul 9, 2015

Ryan Gray was on his way back to Calgary, Alberta this past Monday to try to collect a little Canadian cash at the Stampede. Dealing with the issues crossing the border sure beat where he was a year ago. That's when Gray was sidelined after undergoing abdominal surgery, having to deal with paying medical bills his Pro Rodeo Cowboy's Association insurance did not, and arguing with his insurance company. "I had a decent, decent week," Gray said of a span that started with a win...

  • Stripping Mayweather of WBO title was the right thing to do

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated Jul 9, 2015

Floyd Mayweather Jr. is scheduled to have the final fight of his illustrious career Sept. 12, but he’s going to be doing it with one less championship on the line. The World Boxing Organization (WBO) stripped Mayweather of the WBO welterweight (147 pounds) title on Monday — the same championship he added to his large trophy case after he defeated Manny Pacquiao in their highly anticipated — but underwhelming — fight. The WBO stripping Mayweather of the title isn’t the result of any recent criminal activity. The sanctioning bo...

  • Cheney 15U baseball collects first win of season

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated Jul 9, 2015

The Cheney Summerhawks 15U baseball team picked up their first win of the season and snapped a four-game losing streak, Monday after they shut out the Red Storm, 12-0. Before that game, they lost to the Hurricanes, 7-4, June 30. Against the Hurricanes, the Summerhawks got an early burst of offense, scoring all four of their runs in the first inning, including Luke Martin’s two-run home run. Unfortunately the Hurricanes were able to mount their own offensive attack and came back to win. “Our guys were being much more agg...

The Cheney Summerhawks 17U baseball team went on a rollercoaster ride where they went 2-3 in the annual Wood Bat Classic tournament last weekend. On day two, Cheney lost their first game against Lewis and Clark No. 1, 12-4, then captured their first win of the tournament against Moses Lake, 3-1. • Bandits place second once again

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Jul 9, 2015

The West Plains Bandits 16U fastpitch softball team found themselves in familiar territory at the end of last weekend's Spokane Youth Softball Fourth of July Shootout. The Bandits split their games Friday and Saturday at Spokane's Dwight Merkel Sports Complex to land in Sunday's Sparkler Division title game where they finished as they did in their previous tournament - second. "We seem to not be able to get over the second-place hump," Bandits head coach Byron Pavao said in...

  • Blue Devils on a roll heading into postseason

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Jul 9, 2015

Spokane Blue Devils' AAA American Legion head coach Steve Hare had hoped the recent success he had seen at a tournament in Belgrade, Mont. would provide a springboard for the Wood Bat Classic, but more importantly, his team's finish in the regular season. So far his wish has played out well as the Blue Devils swept three critical games in Spokane league play, 7-0, 12-1 and 13-3 wins over the Northeast 49ers, and then ran their win streak to seven in Wood Bat play, making it to...

  • Looking Back

    Updated Jul 9, 2015

1 Years Ago July 14, 2005 John Maticchio, owner of Lenny’s Restaurant, was pleading with the city of Cheney officials to do something about providing clean, clear drinking water after he experienced ongoing problems having cloudy water come from his tap every time he opened the spigot. Cheney had begun to identify its future areas of growth over the next 20 years, singling out State Route 904 north of the city and along Cheney-Spangle Road and Cheney-Plaza Road to the south. Led by seniors Erik Meyer at quarterback and wide...

  • Grandmas are friends - a short story

    LUELLA DOW, Contributor|Updated Jul 9, 2015

I was at the park with two of my friends one afternoon, when the voice of a mother echoed through the trees surrounding us. “Greg, you nuisance, get over here. I’m not keeping the food just for you.” A young boy, about 8 years old, who had been playing with a ball nearby, put it away and looked up at me. I was distracted by my departing friends who were waving goodbye and smiling at the boy. I watched them as they drove away. I turned around and the boy now stood close to me. He held onto the sleeve of my jacket. I said, “Oh,...

  • Freedom is respecting the rights of everyone

    Updated Jul 9, 2015

This Independence Day was extremely stressful to many people in my area, especially seniors who long for a quiet and safe place to live. I thank God for His protection and care for all of us. On the human level it was reassuring that the Spokane County Police were monitoring our community and available when help was needed. I truly thank those who made that possible. I choose to keep on the positive side and to believe for the day when all people will celebrate the birth of our great country by means that are indeed peaceful...

  • Holiday weekend was a perfect time to reconnect, reflect

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Jul 9, 2015

What a great weekend. The just passed Fourth of July holiday served up a perfect menu of generous portions of family and friends topped off by time to dial life down just a little from the hectic pace it had been on recently. It wasn’t totally without sweat, however. I got to check off the big project, finishing the moving of the final dozen wheelbarrows of river rock — the last of 6,000 pounds dumped in my driveway — into the backyard and hopefully make one more flower bed a...

  • Our part-time legislative budgeting process needs work

    Updated Jul 9, 2015

Being a state legislator is a thankless job — almost as bad as being a Hoopfest court monitor. And even more so this session what with the Legislature needing not only the four-month regular session but also two overtime special sessions and a last-minute, late-night negotiating meeting to pass the $38.2 billion 2015-2017 operating budget. And even then, apparently not all the work is finished as the whole package could unravel over funding, or not funding, K-12 classroom-reduction initiative 1351. We’ll know how the sta...
