  • Medical Lake starts strong, fades in Wood Bat

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Jul 7, 2016

Home field was not very kind to Medical Lake as they hosted a pod at last weekend's Fourth of July Wood Bat Classic. Medical Lake started off on the right foot with a big 11-2 win over Shadle Park No. 2 in the pod's first game at Holliday Field. The day concluded with a 4-0 loss to the Yakima Junior Beetles and that seemed set the stage for the remainder of the weekend. Kyle Thompson threw a complete game against Shadle, striking out 10 and surrendering four hits, all...

  • UFC fighters have learned to adapt new skills over the years

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated Jul 7, 2016

The UFC will have its historic 200th pay per view event on Saturday (July 9). One of the fights will feature former UFC heavyweight champion and WWE wrestler Brock Lesnar taking on former kickboxing world champion Mark Hunt. It will be Lesnar’s first MMA fight in five years. Although his initial UFC run was short — 2008-11— he was a dominant champion and one of the promotion’s top draws. But a recurring bout with diverticulitis and back-to-back losses against Cain Velasquez and Alistair Overeem forced him to take time away fr...

  • More of a challenge for Lilac field chasing the big check

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Jul 7, 2016

The lure of the bigger first-place check is working to attract more professionals to the 2016 Lilac Open Golf Tournament that runs July 7 – 10 at The Fairways Golf Course. As of July 5 three former champions are in the field, including the 2015 winner, Brian Miller from Indian Wells, Calif. Wells took a one-shot win, 267-268 over a pair of players, Conner Robbins from Bremerton, Wash. and Jesse Schulte of Florence, Ore. Tony Robydek from Lakewood, Wash., the 2014 champ, and Ru...

  • Cannons claim third place in Wood Bat tourney

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Jul 7, 2016

The Spokane Cannons may be disappointed that their quest for a Senior American Legion Wood Bat Classic title ended last Sunday afternoon, a game short of reaching the final. Spokane lost to the Edmonton Cardinals 8-1 in the semifinals July 4 with the Canadian club later going on to beat the Yakima Beetles 7-5 for the AAA crown. The Cannons have more important things at hand so they will likely forget about the tournament with important league games ahead and playoff berths soo...
