  • Blue Devils earn rare win over Yakima Pepsi Pak

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Jun 18, 2015

If the Spokane Blue Devils AAA American Legion baseball team want some type of idea of how much things have improved since last year, for now at least, they will look at their Saturday, June 13 outing in Yakima. The Blue Devils earned a split in a nonleague doubleheader with Yakima Pepsi Pak, the defending AAA state champions, winning 5-4 and losing 7-2. And not only did the Blue Devils topple one of the state’s premiere Legion programs, but they did so very much shorthanded....

  • Medical Lake tennis teams have memorable seasons

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Jun 18, 2015

It took a little while for Medical Lake’s veteran tennis coach, Dawn Eliassen, to realize that it was her boys, and maybe not the defending Northeast A League champion girls that were going to excel in 2015. “It didn’t really occur to me that it was possible until we were at Lakeside early in the season, maybe our third match,” Eliassen said. “We lost it, but shouldn’t have.” That’s when it clicked into place for her that there was a ton of potential in the boys and coache...

  • Catching a glimpse of 'The Cup will have to wait for now

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Jun 18, 2015

The visit of Lord Stanley’s Cup will have to wait at least another year. And if that is the case a year or so from now, local hockey favorite son Tyler Johnson’s wrist injury just might be healed so he can heft the trophy around for the day that each member of the winning team takes it home. Johnson’s Tampa Bay Lightning lost 2-0 in game six of the 2015 Stanley Cup playoffs in a series where every other game was decided by one goal. Even for non-hockey fans, it was rivet...

Twenty-five years ago on June 19, 1990, a fire gutted the old, vacant, Congregational Church on Fourth at F Street. The fire was believed to have been started by a 10-year-old boy and his friends who had been seen playing with fire in the area that day.
