  • Diamond Divas defeat Tommy G's in close 8-7 game

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated May 21, 2015

The Tommy G's Espresso softball team fell short in their comeback, losing to the Tri County Diamond Divas, 8-7, May 14, in West Plains Little League AAA softball action at the Rein King field in Medical Lake. After being down 5-0 in the bottom of the first inning, Natalie Trujillo hit a two-run home run to put Tommy G's on the scoreboard. The Diamond Divas scored two runs in the third before Tommy G's tied the game after a two-run single from Trujillo. The Divas scored the...

  • Cards wraps up NEA track with pair of wins

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated May 21, 2015

They’ve been tough, if not dominant in both sprints and distance races so far this track season and now Medical Lake is finding new strength in field events that could help deliver a repeat of the state 1A championship in two weeks. Between now and then, however, are the two-day District 7 championships Friday and Saturday, May 22-23 at Riverside High School. The Cardinal boys come off a pair of dual-meet wins last Wednesday in Colville where they topped the hosts 77-67 and v...

Six members of Medical Lake’s tennis team, three boys and three girls, have qualified for regional competition Friday, May 22 and Saturday, May 23 at Mead High School. Noah Ray, an All-Northeast A League player in boy’s singles, will meet an as yet undetermined opponent from Lind/Ritzville/Sprague in his opener. Isiah Farmen and Austin Brown, the NEA’s doubles MVPs, take on a team from St. George’s. In girls’ play All-NEA singles player, Alyssa Fitzgerald, faces a St. Georg...

  • Cardinals are out in softball

    Updated May 21, 2015

Deer Park pitcher Kylie Sweeney threw a nine-strikeout, one-hit, 11-0 shutout against Medical Lake Tuesday night knocking the Cardinals out of the District 7 softball playoffs in Deer Park. Medical Lake’s lone hit came from Hannah Petek. The Cardinals finish the season with a 6-13 record. See the full story in the next edition of the Cheney Free Press....

  • Medical Lake snaps softball streak, gets roughed up by Colville

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated May 21, 2015

There could be tougher roads to take to earn a berth in Saturday’s District 7 softball tournament at Lakeside for the Medical Lake Cardinals. But for now the route either travels through, or stops at Deer Park (15-5) where the Cardinals (6-12) met the Stags May 19 in a loser-out game. In traveling to Deer Park, Medical Lake seeks to halt a skid that has seen the team lose 10 of its last 11 games, the break coming last week with a 15-5 win over Newport on May 12. That win s...

  • Cardinals' season ends in district baseball play

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated May 21, 2015

Cory Wagner’s shoulders and arm were, in the end, just not large enough, or strong enough, to continue carrying his team. The junior pitched his Medical Lake Cardinals into last week’s 1A district baseball playoffs with a 10-strikeout, three-hit, 3-1 win May 12 over Lakeside. But after that things stalled as the Cardinals lost a May 13 contest at Freeman, 5-0 and 8-4 Saturday to Deer Park to finish their season 9-14. “That was just a great game, well played,” Cardina...

  • Blackhawks gear up for state baseball tournament

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated May 21, 2015

After losing to West Valley 11-10 in the May 12, Great Northern League championship game, the Cheney High baseball team traveled to Ellensburg last Saturday to play the Bulldogs in a 2A regional game. This was a scenario Cheney was in last year that resulted in a 7-0 loss to the Bulldogs and the end of Cheney’s 2014 season. However, history did not repeat itself as the Blackhawks defeated the Bulldogs 6-5. They advance to the first round of the state tournament in Yakima. In the Ellensburg game, the Blackhawks took an e...

  • Blackhawks shot down in bid for return to state tournament

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated May 21, 2015

The Cheney High boys’ soccer team saw their season come to an end last weekend in perhaps the cruelest way possible — a 1-0 road shootout loss against Quincy Saturday. Despite being out shot 6-3, the Blackhawks played well, especially defensively where they managed to recover a couple times the Jacks got behind them and prevent clear looks at goal. Goalkeeper Kameron Galm made several good saves, head coach Mark Kiver said, while several Quincy shots either went wide or ricocheted off the crossbar or posts. Cheney had a cou...

  • Vijil's Shock arena football career earns him special honor

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated May 21, 2015

It was a fittingly strange journey in an oddly strange game that made Raul Vijil a hero in his new hometown. For a kid that grew up in his real hometown of Pasco, Wash. dreaming of being a star in the other futball — soccer — Vijil realized a surreal dream of now seeing his No. 15 jersey will hang from the rafters of the Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena. His jersey retirement May 16 at halftime of the Spokane Shock’s Arena Football League game with San Jose proved to be the o...

The Cheney High track and field team advanced six individuals and a pair of relay teams from last Friday's District 7 meet to regional competition May 22 at West Valley High School in Millwood against teams from the Central Washington Athletic Conference. KD Skillingstad led all individuals with three district titles in girls' events last Friday, also at West Valley. The freshman turned in her best marks so far this season to win the 100-meter hurdles in 15.03 seconds and the...

  • Cards fall to Colville in soccer shootout

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated May 21, 2015

Behind the saves to all-Northeast A League keeper Nathan Reichenbach, plus an early penalty kick goal from him in the shootout, the Colville Indians scored a 1-0 soccer win over Medical Lake May 14 in the district championship game at Gonzaga Prep. "Their keeper had the game of his life," Medical Lake head coach Zane Higgins said. Reichenbach completed the game by stopping three straight Medical Lake shots. He stopped seven in regulation. Medical Lake keeper Nick Isherwood...

  • Lady Blackhawks win first District 7 title

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated May 21, 2015

Back to back home runs helped lift the Cheney High softball team to its first District 7 title with an 8-3 win last Saturday over visiting Pullman. The win gives the Lady Blackhawks the district's top seed into the regional round of play, setting up one more home game this Saturday with the Central Washington Athletic Conference's No. 3 seed for a chance to play in the 2A state tournament. After falling behind 1-0 in the top of the first, Cheney loaded the bases with two outs...
