Douglas LaBar, the owner of the Mason Jar and this year's Mayfest committee treasurer, wore many hats along with other committee members to make this event a fun gathering. "I was super...

  • Outdoors with Jon Wilson

    Jon Wilson|Updated May 12, 2022

Editors note: Jon Wilson is an avid fisherman, hunter and hiker. His journeys center around the Inland Northwest and the Idaho Panhandle. Spring is a great time to fish for spiny-ray (aka panfish) species in the Inland Northwest. Perch, crappie, smallmouth bass, and walleye awaken each spring as the water reaches and exceeds 50 degrees. Their delicately mild flavor, interesting life cycles, and seasonal habits frequently draw me to Banks Lake, Lake Spokane and Lake Pend...

  • Crime on the rise

    Matthew O. Stephens, Cheney Free Press|Updated May 12, 2022

AIRWAY HEIGHTS—A city’s rapid growth rate often translates to increased criminal activity. Such is the case in Airway Heights and that has law enforcement seeking creative ways to keep a handle on things. Police Chief Brad Richmond said that his department is short-staffed and has learned to “do more with less” as crime numbers rise. “Last year, we had over 17,000 calls for service, which is an all-time high,” Richmond said. “This year, we are already on pace for 20,000 – 21,000 calls.” The major crimes investigations te...

  • Milling can foot bill to reduce wildfire

    Don Brunell|Updated May 12, 2022

Thinning public woodlands to remove millions of dead trees is a way to generate much needed cash to reduce wildfire risks, improve forest health, and protect rural homeowners and farms. It is money the U.S. Forest Service and Washington’s Dept. of Natural Resources don’t have because the bulk of their funds are tied up fighting fires. Our state’s wildfire severity has worsened in recent years. The 2020 fire season was particularly destructive. Over 1,250 square miles burne...

    Jason Mercier|Updated May 12, 2022

Proponents of the unconstitutional capital gains income tax are working overtime to prevent voters from weighing in. Now capital gains income tax supporters are gearing up to counter a potential I-1929 signature gathering campaign by setting up a surveillance system to report any ballot petition signing locations. As reported by the Everett Herald: “Should I-1929 petitions get circulated, opponents won’t be sitting idly by. They set up a h...

CHENEY—The fourth Quad-Duel GSL track meet held at University High on Thursday, May 5 didn’t produce as many favorable results of the previous three. That’s due in part to Head Coach Derek Slaughter and his staff deciding to use several of their higher scoring athletes in different roles. Switching things up enabled the coaches to enter several JV or other varsity members who hadn’t had the opportunity to participate in the other meets. Some of the changes for the boys included having Braxton Hinton, the Blackhawks top spr...
