  • Blackhawks fall to Pullman, West Valley in GNL play

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Feb 6, 2014

Mistakes and inability to make baskets in key moments of a game led to two losses last week for the Cheney High boys' basketball team. The Blackhawks stayed with defending 2A state champion and top-ranked Pullman on the road Tuesday until turnovers helped the Greyhounds pull away for a 66-45 win. Friday the visiting West Valley Eagles nickel and dimed the Blackhawks with numerous short scoring runs that Cheney couldn't find answers for in its 68-50 loss. Tuesday the Blackhawks...

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Feb 6, 2014

The road finally got to be just a little more pleasant for the Eastern Washington women’s basketball team. Melissa William’s jump shot with 1 minute, 57 seconds remaining held up for the winning points as the Eagles scored a 52-51 Big Sky Conference victory over Northern Colorado last Saturday afternoon in Greeley. The win, Eastern’s first this year on the road, salvaged a split in the Eagles’ eastern road trip following their 82-60 loss Thursday at North Dakota, in Grand F...

Medical Lake will take the momentum of three straight Northeast A League victories into their hosting of Saturday's district tournament. Wins last Thursday in Newport over the host Grizzlies 54-27 and 63-18 against Kettle Falls in a triple-dual evened the Cardinals' league record at 3-3. In the Kettle Falls victory, Ricky Petersen at 145 pounds completed an undefeated regular season at 6-0 with a pin in his weight class. Nick Reed, a 113-pounder also won by a pin and finished...

  • Harvey saves Eastern once again

    Paul Delaney, Staff Reporter|Updated Feb 6, 2014

The Eastern Washington men's basketball team came dangerously close to shooting themselves in both feet when it came to their Big Sky Conference playoff future this past weekend. But sophomore Tyler Harvey came to the rescue - again. Harvey, who scored just seven points in a 73-61 loss last Thursday to the University of North Dakota – a game where he shot just 3-of-18 from the field and 1-of-8 from 3-point range – turned it on, and around Saturday in the Eagles' 94-90 ove...

  • Cheney showcases 'Seahawk Spirit' on Super Bowl Sunday

    Al Stover, Staff Reporter|Updated Feb 6, 2014

Being a fan of a football team that didn’t make it to the Super Bowl can be a bit of a letdown, especially if you’re like me and had to witness your beloved Minnesota Vikings finish the season with a record of 5-10-1. But even a disappointing Vikings season didn’t stop me from being filled with the “Seahawk Spirit” this past Sunday. As I ventured out to run some errands, I noticed the many Seahawks faithful out, wearing their blue and green apparel as they grabbed goodies for their Super Bowl parties. Several businesse...

  • Lady Hawks late blitz nets rare win in Pullman

    Updated Feb 6, 2014

By JOHN McCALLUM Editor It’s rare when a Cheney team travels to Whitman County and returns singing anything else but the blues. Last Tuesday the Lady Hawks bus ride back from Pullman must have been filled with happy tunes indeed as Cheney outscored the host Greyhounds 21-5 in the final eight minutes to pull away for a convincing 64-40 win in Great Northern League girls basketball action. Head coach Shannon Root said she couldn’t really explain what happened to inspire her team in the final period, other than a prevailing sen...

  • A brisk walking pace is better

    Dr. E. KIRSTEN PETERS, Contributor|Updated Feb 6, 2014

One of the things my mutt from the pound and I like to do together is go on long walks. Sometimes on weekends Buster Brown and I stroll at the bottom of the Snake River Canyon where dogs can be off-leash (as Mother Nature intended). There’s a six-mile walk in the canyon we like to do: me limping along in a straight line, Buster ranging over a wider area of ground sniffing for wildlife. Closer to home, there is a six-mile loop around town we enjoy. I think I can speak for both of us when I say that we simply feel better a...
