  • Offense falters for Medical Lake girls in losses

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Jan 22, 2015

It was an oh-for week for Medical Lake's girls on the basketball court. And that was not just because they finished last week winless, falling in a pair of Northeast A League games, 60-14 to Lakeside last Tuesday and 45-28 at Riverside Friday. Mixed in was a 30-22 nonleague defeat in the annual Golden Feather Spirit Game last Wednesday to rival Cheney. The Cardinals found themselves searching for more offense, but not finding it as twice they suffered through being shutout in...

  • Cheney boys lose last-minute heart breaker

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Jan 22, 2015

For Cheney High School boys’ basketball head coach Chris Dunn, the key for the Blackhawks re-entry into the win column after six straight losses is twofold — play four quarters of basketball and finish the game. Up by one after three quarters at East Valley Jan. 6, Cheney ends up losing by 10. Ahead by nine three nights later at West Valley, the Blackhawks lose 53-47. That trend continued in a pair of losses last week, 51-47 to visiting East Valley Saturday and Wednesday’s heartbreaking 36-35 loss to Medical Lake in the G...

The night started off with Billy Bakke (160 pounds) picking up the first win for Cheney after he defeated Issac Drapper via 11-9 in overtime. Head coach Brad Rasmussen said Bakke recently recovered from an illness. “It was good to see him get the win, it was good for his confidence,” Rasmussen said. “It was also a good way to get the night going.” Justin Randolph (170) followed Bakke with a...

  • Sacramento State hands Eastern women first Big Sky loss

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Jan 22, 2015

Any number of things might have played a major part in Sacramento State handing Eastern Washington its first Big Sky Conference home court loss of the season. But a couple of statistical categories seem to really tell the story in the Hornets’ 73-67 Reese Court win last Saturday afternoon. Eastern committed a season-high 28 turnovers that led to a 30-10 Sac State edge in points. The loss also ended the Eagles seven-game winning streak and dropped them into second place with a...

  • Lady Blackhawks shoot their way to Golden Feather win

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Jan 22, 2015

Despite a cold shooting night, the Cheney High School girls' basketball team found a way to take control of the annual Golden Feather Spirit Game at Medical Lake. With the basketball not falling through the net as hoped, the Lady Blackhawks just kept shooting, and found their way to a 30-22 win over the Lady Cardinals. "I thought we would play better, but that's OK," Cheney head coach Shannon Root said of the controlled chaos of the spirit game. The Lady Cardinals made up for...
