  • Celebrating Martin Luther King Day brings many reflections

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated Jan 21, 2016

Last Monday, Jan. 18, people across the United States celebrated the life and legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., a holiday that celebrated its 30-year anniversary. The holiday was first observed in 1986, three years President Ronald Reagan signed it into law. On The King Center’s website, Coretta Scott King, King’s widow, explained that the holiday honors many aspects about her late husband’s philosophy. I attended my first MLK rally and march in downtown Spokane on Monday morning and it was quite an exper...

  • Violence decreasing for centuries

    Updated Jan 21, 2016

When our Ukrainian neighbors moved into a rundown trailer a decade ago, two large dogs started running loose on our property. Oh man, we thought, more people who move to the country and let their dogs run rampant. So we grumbled, talked to other neighbors and stewed about it for a few days. Finally I decided to say something and armed myself with a jar of homemade grape juice to “welcome” them to the neighborhood — and also kindly ask them to keep their dogs under control. Fast-forward several years. About eight people of al...

  • New York example sends sin tax rationale up in smoke

    Updated Jan 21, 2016

The following editorial was published in the Jan. 16 Orange County Register. It does not necessarily reflect the views and opinions of the Cheney Free Press editorial board. New York state offers a classic example of the failings of “sin taxes.” Facing a budget crunch in 2010, the Legislature increased the cigarette excise tax by $1.60 per pack (58 percent), to a total of $4.35 per pack, by far the highest cigarette tax in the nation. In New York City, which additionally imposes its own $1.50 excise tax, on top of the $1....

  • Blackhawks find finishing more difficult than starting

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Jan 21, 2016

Head coach Gregg Smith thinks his Cheney High School boys’ basketball team is on the cusp of a recipe for winning, but lacks one small ingredient — knowing how to finish close games. In four of the last five games, the Blackhawks have been close in the final minute or two, but haven’t found a way to seal a game they can put in the win column. It’s not something that can be readily taught with X’s and O’s on the chalkboard. “It’s an experience thing,” Smith said. Both of Cheney’s losses last week point to finishing. The Blac...

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Jan 21, 2016

The Medical Lake girl’s two-game winning streak from a week ago turned into a new three-game losing streak. The Cardinals dropped a pair of Northeast A League contests 56-36 at Lakeside Jan. 12 and at home 43-34 to Riverside Jan. 16. Last Thursday they fell to Cheney 59-41 in the annual Golden Feather Spirit Game. However in falling to 2-5 in league play and 3-9 overall Cardinals’ head coach Kyle Lundberg is not concerned his team might have stepped backwards. “Not at all,...

  • Eastern men stay on a roll at Reese Court

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Jan 21, 2016

The home cooking recipes the Eastern Washington men's basketball team served up last week received rave reviews. The Eagles rolled to a pair of convincing Big Sky Conference victories at Reese Court, 106-80 over Southern Utah Jan. 14 and 96-73 Jan. 16 against Northern Arizona. That ran the Eagles' win streak to three after a Jan. 9 win over Idaho. Eastern will hit the road for games tonight (Jan. 21) in Bozeman at Montana State and Saturday versus Montana in Missoula.
