Hudson Petek at 160 pounds, Ian O’Brien (280) and Jackson Tappero (182) all won by pins for the Cardinals. “We competed very well,” head coach Sam Petersen said. “Two others, Keoni Paikuli and Justin Brundage, were ahead before they got caught and pinned.” The Cardinals took a limited s...

  • Cardinal girls earn NEA split

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Jan 15, 2015

It’s been feast or famine for the Medical Lake girl’s basketball team this season. And last week’s split of a pair of Northeast A League contests, losing 42-38 at home to Colville, but capping things with a hold-your-breath 35-34 win on the road at Newport, was a perfect example. “Yeah that was a nice win,” Cardinals head coach Kyle Lundberg said of the Newport victory. “I was proud of the girls, and how they were able to find a way to win. That’s important because we re...

  • Three losses drop Cheney into Great Northern cellar

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Jan 15, 2015

The Cheney High School girls' basketball team came up short last week in their bid to move up in the standings of the Great Northern League. Instead, the Lady Blackhawks dropped all three of their road contests, including a 43-42 loss at Pullman Saturday night. Cheney's balanced scoring helped them stake a 25-22 lead at the half, but a cold - or colder than the Greyhounds - third quarter led to a one-point deficit heading into the final eight minutes, and the Lady Blackhawks...

  • Hawks come up short against Valley schools

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Jan 15, 2015

Three straight road losses last week helped keep the Cheney High School boys’ basketball team at the bottom of the Great Northern League pack. The Blackhawks came up short in a couple of tough losses to Spokane Valley schools, beginning with a 51-41 loss Jan. 6 at East Valley and last Friday’s 53-47 setback at West Valley. Last Saturday, Cheney was no match for the No. 4-ranked 2A school in the state, Pullman, falling 66-35 to the Greyhounds. The Blackhawks had shots at upsetting both Valley schools. Tuesday against the Kni...

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Jan 15, 2015

With one of the toughest, and by far busiest weeks of the season so far in front of them, the Medical Lake boy's basketball team takes the momentum of two convincing victories with them. The Cardinals topped Colville 61-50, Jan. 6 at home and then traveled to Newport, Jan. 9 where they breezed past the Grizzlies 67-38. Medical Lake, who faced the top-rung of the Northeast A League teams - a place they share with a 5-0 record - hosted Lakeside (4-1 NEA, 9-2 overall) this past...

  • Wilson on verge of being best Seahawks' quarterback ever

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated Jan 15, 2015

Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson put on an impressive performance in Seattle’s 31-17 win over the Carolina Panthers in the NFC divisional playoff game. Besides Kam Chancellor’s pick for a 90-yard touchdown, Wilson was the star of the night. He completed 15 of 22 passes for 268 yards and three touchdowns. In a postgame interview, former Seahawks quarterback Warren Moon praised Wilson for his performance. “That ball, that was some of the best touch you will ever see,” Moon said. The Seahawks’ have had some great quarterba...

  • Eastern women close strong against Idaho

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Jan 15, 2015

As the Eastern Washington women's basketball team watched the University of Idaho turn a 16-point deficit into a three-point lead with just under five minutes to play in last Saturday's Big Sky Conference basketball game at Reese Court, they needed a fix. That came from a combination of youth and a veteran for the Eagles who survived to collect a 71-65 win and keep their conference record unblemished at 3-0 - alone atop the early standings - with their overall mark at 10-4....
