  • Payne leads Eastern women to win over Idaho

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Jan 6, 2017

A 22-0 run that spanned two quarters allowed the Eastern Washington women’s basketball team to hold off an Idaho rally and hand the Eagles a 67-57 victory in their Big Sky Conference opener at Reese Court, Dec. 31. With senior Ashli Payne pouring in a game-high 21 points, and getting support from fellow senior Tisha Phillips’ 14 points, plus junior Delaney Hodgins’ 12, the Eagles earned the victory over the defending conference champions. Eastern, which evened its overa...

  • EWU men hold off Vandals in Big Sky opener

    Updated Jan 5, 2017

By PAUL DELANEY Staff Reporter A solid start allowed Eastern Washington to withstand a faltering finish and claim a 69-62 Big Sky Conference men’s basketball victory over the University of Idaho Dec. 30 in Moscow at the Cowan Spectrum. Jacob Wiley had a career-high 23 points and fellow senior Felix Von Hofe added 22 more as the Eagles (1-0 Big Sky, 9-5 overall) built a 39-25 first half lead and held off the Victor Sanders-led Vandals. Sanders’ 32-point night left him the only Idaho player to reach double figures. The Eastern...

  • EWU 2016 soccer was memorable in so many ways

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Jan 5, 2017

Eastern Washington's women's soccer team had a season that will go down in the history books as the best ever. The year included milestone after milestone, most notably the school's first-ever berth in the NCAA tournament, as well as the Eagles' Big Sky Conference title. These, and numerous other parts of this season earned the team the No. 2 EWU sports story in a vote of the Cheney Free Press staff. This special season culminated with a 3-1 loss in Los Angeles to the...

  • Nguyen takes home Freeman Invite title

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated Jan 5, 2017

History repeated itself on Dec. 30 at Freeman High School when Cheney High wrestler Zack Nguyen won his second Freeman Invitational championship. Nguyen tore through the 138-pound bracket, defeating West Valley’s Gaje Caro, via a 12-1 majority decision, and pinning Lewis and Clark’s Colby Richardson, University’s Trevor Allgood and Deer Park’s Jake Miller to once again stand at the top of the podium. Nguyen was not the only Cheney wrestler to take home a medal from the Freeman tournament as Josh Baker (220) finished third i...

  • Cardinal girls sweep Eagle Classic games

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Jan 5, 2017

Medical Lake’s girls’ basketball team appears to be in a good place — in a tie atop the Northeast A League standings with Lakeside — but head coach Kyle Lundberg says there’s room to be even better. The Cardinals will see if that’s true as they resumed NEA play following a 2-0 finish in the Eagle Holiday Classic tournament at West Valley in the Spokane Valley. They beat 2B Kettle Falls with ease, 52-32, Dec. 27, and staved off a second-half rally to beat Priest River, Idah...

  • Medical Lake boys' first loss is perfect 'wake-up call'

    Updated Jan 5, 2017

By PAUL DELANEY Staff Reporter Last week's first loss of the season for the Medical Lake boys' basketball team was certainly a wakeup call. And it came at just the right time, perhaps? Medical Lake opened play in the Eagle Holiday Classic tournament at West Valley in the Spokane Valley Dec. 27, with a 46-43 loss to 2-8 Sandpoint, Idaho. But the Cardinals finished with a resounding 63-50 win over perennial B-tournament team, St. George's, Dec. 29. "The loss to Sandpoint was...

  • Blackhawks end 2016 with four-game winning streak

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Jan 5, 2017

The Cheney High School boys basketball team ended 2016 with a four-game winning streak, including a pair of blowout wins at West Valley’s Eagle Classic tournament. The Blackhawks opened the streak with a 64-54 win over Lakeland of Idaho’s 4A Inland Empire League on Dec. 20. Cheney rushed to a 33-19 halftime lead, and withstood a fourth-quarter rally by the visiting Eagles for the win. Jaylen Worthem led Cheney with 19 points, while Devin Cook added 18 and Cameron Hardt nine. Cook also had six assists and four rebounds. Twenty...

  • Cheney girls go 2-1 at Eagle Classic

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Jan 5, 2017

By head coach Lorin Carlon's estimate, the Cheney High School girls basketball team had a successful appearance at West Valley's Eagle Classic tournament, going 2-1 overall. After wins in their first two games, the Lady Blackhawks finished with a 49-45 loss to 2B state title contender St. George's on Dec. 29. The Dragons used the shooting of Hailey Higashi to stake themselves to a 30-15 halftime lead, with Higashi scoring 15 of her game-high 23 points in the first 16 minutes....

  • Eastern Washington stuns WSU in football 45-42

    Updated Jan 5, 2017

By PAUL DELANEY Staff Reporter The All-American did what most people expected. The new starting quarterback certainly overachieved in the eyes of everyone, except, perhaps, himself and his coach. And the defense, much-maligned as the 2015 season ended, bent but never broke. Combined, these were some of the parts that helped manufacture Eastern Washington's 45-42 season-opening nonconference football victory over Washington State before a sold out Martin Stadium crowd of...

  • Rousey's loss does not diminish her legacy, or footprint on sport

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated Jan 5, 2017

Having watched mixed martial arts for several years, I’ve seen many fighters fall at the hands of a better opponent. That’s why I wasn’t too surprised when former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey lost to current titleholder Amanda Nunes in the first round of UFC 207 last Friday. Rousey, who was heavily favored to win the fight, came to the octagon, seemingly ready to compete. Once the introductions were over the fight began, she produced little offense while taking some heavy punches from Nunes. At the 48 second...

  • Medical Lake soccer soared

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Jan 5, 2017

Just how far has the Medical Lake girls’ soccer program risen in three years? Simple statistics easily illustrate the answer. In 2014 an 0-14 team scored just six times and the 3-13 team head coach Zane Higgins guided in 2015 and hoped to build upon for this season netted 18. The recently completed season that saw Medical Lake battle for the regular season Northeast A League title until the final two weeks of the campaign, left them with more than triple the number of wins — n...

  • CHS volleyball wins league, district titles

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated Jan 5, 2017

How does the Cheney High volleyball team and head coach Heather Zorrozua top their 2015 season, which concluded with a share of that year's Great Northern League championship with Pullman? Try winning not only a second-straight league title, but also a district championship and an appearance at the state tournament. These accolades earned the Blackhawks volleyball team the No. 2 top high school sports story for 2016. Cheney wrapped up a stellar season on Nov. 12 after they...

  • Medical Lake boys repeat as 1A runners-up

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Jan 5, 2017

If winning a third 1A cross country state championship in four years was not in the cards for the Medical Lake Cardinals, head coach Gene Blankenship will certainly settle for the second straight runner-up finish that occurred in Pasco, Nov. 5. Because there were plenty of small victories in their 83-95 loss to Deer Park on the fairways of Sun Willows Golf Course. Bush High School was third with 121 points, followed by Riverside's 148 and Lakeside's 155. With the finish, the...
